A hilarious new cross-promotion with Venom 2: Let There Be Carnage and the NFL sees star tight end George Kittle move in with Eddie Brock and Venom.
A hilarious new promo for Venom 2: Let There Be Carnage sees Eddie Brock (and his other half) move in with National Football League (NFL) star tight end, George Kittle, and things did not work out well for this (very) odd couple.
The new commercial coincided with ESPN’s airing of Monday Night Football and tied in with the fact that Venom is set in San Francisco, where Kittle is a multi-Pro Bowl tight end who has more receiving yards in the first three years of his career than any other tight end in NFL history.
The conceit of the commercial is that Kittle wants to get an apartment in San Francisco that is closer to the stadium than his current place (which is a bit misleading, since the 49ers actually play in Levi’s Stadium, which is in Santa Clara, over 40 miles from San Francisco) and since rents are so crazy, even a star athlete like Kittle needs to get a roommate, but regrets the decision when Eddie Brock and Venom move in with him.
The commercial cleverly mixes together footage from the film to add Kittle to the scene, like when the alien symbiote is cooking Eddie breakfast, Kittle is now there, as well.
Other scenes show Kittle opening up the bathroom mirror to see Venom leaving messages for him telling him how delicious he looks and Kittle remarking that despite Eddie telling him that he was in no danger, he still woke up one morning with Venom’s tendrils wrapped around his neck.
Another clever mix between the two genres is when Kittle and Brock (and Venom) are watching ESPN’s Sportscenter and the highlights anger Venom so much that it throws the television set out the window. As Kittle notes, that was the third TV set that he destroyed this week. He is used to this much aggression on the football field, but not in his private life.
The commercial tie-in is especially interesting considering the fact that ESPN is owned by Disney, who owns Marvel, and Venom 2 is produced by Sony Studios and is not part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but a good tie-in opportunity is hard to pass up for either Sony or ESPN.
