In Star Wars: Ghost of Vader’s Castle, Chewbacca transformed into a very different kind of wookie in one infamous character’s adventure.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers from Star Wars Adventures: Ghost of Vader’s Castle #2, on sale now from IDW Publishing.
Stating at over two meters tall, Wookiees are some of the most intimidating figures in the Star Wars Universe. They are known for their strength and have a tendency to pulling people’s arms off, so an enraged Wookie is the perfect material for the kinds of horror stories that the Ghost of Vader’s Castle miniseries tells. And in Star Wars Adventures: Ghosts of Vader’s Castle by Cavan Scott, Francesco Francavilla, Derek Charm, and Charlie Kirchoff, Chewbacca becomes the stuff of nightmares in “Attack of the 50 Foot Wookie.”
The first issue in the series featured Milo Graf as he and his droid Crater searched through an old Imperial library on Orchis 2. While doing so, Milo recounted a nightmare about a droid virus during the Clone Wars that infected C3-P0 and R2-D2 while also turning Jar Jar Binks into a green-eyed monster. After the dream, it was revealed that the dream wasn’t the only evil thing going on because Crater captured his young master and took him away.
This issue opened with Mino missing, and his sister Lena determined to find her brother. However, Chancellor Mon Mothma won’t lend Lena a ship, so Princess Leia offered an alternative and suggested that Lena find a smuggler by the name of Jaxxon T. Tumperakki on the planet of Emita. When Lena arrived there, she found the infamous rabbit-esque Lepi smuggler in a bar, and he told everyone around him about a nightmare that he had.
His story started on the planet of Kashyyyk, where Jaxxon was having an argument with an old, grey-haired Wookie. He was contracted to take a shipment of saava berries to Glutta the Hutt, but the old Wookie won’t let him take off. Chewbacca and Han Solo — who Jaxxon despised — soon arrived to inform Jaxxon that the Wookiees are celebrating the Festival of Bounty, and it was bad luck to transport anything from the planet. An upset Jaxxon stormed off, but he had already snuck the berries aboard the Rabbit’s Foot.
Han soon learned about Jaxxon’s trickery and was annoyed, but he thought that nothing would happen because that was only an old superstition. However, he was soon proven very wrong. Chewbacca became engaged and grew to a colossal size, picked Jaxxon’s ship out of the sky, crushed it and ensured that the berries didn’t leave the planet. However, there was a problem. The overgrown Chewie went on a Godzilla-like rampage, destroying everything in his path.
When Solo couldn’t talk Chewie down, the old Wookie stuffed a savva berry in Jaxxon’s mouth, which caused him to grow to the same size as Chewie. The two overgrown beings fought each other, and no one was safe until the magic wore off. Everything would’ve been fine after that if they hadn’t crushed the Millennium Falcon in the process, so Han Solo ate one of the berries and chased after Jaxxon as the dream sequence ended.
After Jaxxon’s story, Lena told him why she was there, and nightmares were the common theme. Milo had nightmares about droids, Lena has had nightmares about her brother on Mustafar and Jaxxon’s story was a nightmare. With all of that, Lena was convinced that something nefarious was going on, and the last few panels prove her right. They showed Crater emerging from a ship to deliver an unconscious Milo to Mustafar.
While 50 foot Wookiees may not be plausible in Star Wars reality, the power of the dark side looks to be even more terrifying in the coming issues.
