David Quinn and Tim Vigil’s ultra-violent Faust — one of the goriest, most NSFW superhero horror comic book series ever published — has been optioned by Sony for an animated show.
Godkiller: Walk Among Us comic book writer/filmmaker Matteo Pizzolo will pen the Faust adaptation as part of his first-look with Sony Pictures Television, reported Deadline. Quinn and Vigil will act as consulting producers on the TV series, with Brian Giberson of Black Mask Entertaining executive producing.
Created by Quinn and Vigil, Faust follows John Jaspers, a patient at a mental health facility who sells his soul to the Devil in exchange for super-powers. Upon transforming into a super-strong, metal claw-wielding costumed vigilante, Jaspers preys upon New York City’s criminal underworld, which is controlled by the Devil under the guise of a crime boss known as “M” for Mephistopheles. The comic book series launched in 1987 and ran for 15 issues before reaching its conclusion in 2012 following a prolonged break between issues 13 and 14.
Faust was part of the “deconstructed superhero” wave of comic books that released in the 1980s and embraced a decidedly adult tone in terms of their graphic violence, sexual content and themes. Among the most famous “deconstructed superhero” comics released during that period of time were Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ Watchmen, Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns and James O’Barr’s The Crow.
The Faust comics were presumably inspired by the German legend about the scholar who sells his soul to the Devil in exchange for unlimited knowledge and everyday pleasures, only to gradually realize the error of his ways. Quinn and Vigil’s main comic series was previously adapted into a 2000 Spanish movie titled Faust: Love of the Damned, which Quinn co-wrote. Much like the original comics, Love of the Damned is notorious for its extreme violence and schlocky flavor of supernatural horror.
In addition to Faust, Sony Pictures Television is developing a host of Marvel TV shows, beginning with its live-action Spider-Man spinoff series Silk. The Silk show is set up at Amazon Prime, with HBO’s Watchmen alum Tom Spezialy serving as showrunner and executive producing alongside Lauren Moon, who is writing the series. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who co-wrote and produced 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, will also produce the show.
