Uh-Oh: Netflix Launching ANOTHER ‘Problematic’ Take on He-Man

[ad_1]

Just a few weeks after Kevin Smith’s Masters of the Universe: Revelation premiered its first volume of episodes, Netflix has revealed the first official trailer and release date (September 16th) for their other He-Man-themed series. Simply titled He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, this version of the material is geared more toward a younger audience.

In the trailer, we see Prince Adam changing into He-Man for the first time, as the series restarts the story from the beginning. We can also see the other Masters of the Universe, as well as the villain Skeletor. Watch the video below to see for yourself.

Here’s the synopsis:

“On the planet of Eternia, a young lost prince discovers the powers of Grayskull and transforms into He-Man, Master of the Universe! The classic battle between He-Man and evil Skeletor rages to new heights as both hero and villain forge new and mighty teams. A new generation of heroes fighting for the fate of us all. In the end, who will become MASTER OF THE UNIVERSE?”

This is the second of two series based on He-Man and the Masters of the Universe to be developed at Netflix. The streamer also recently premiered the near universally panned Kevin Smith-created series Masters of the Universe: Revelation, which was pitched as a direct sequel to the 1980s cartoon and featured an all-star voice cast that included names like Mark Hamill, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Lena Headey, and Chris Wood. And although it did cause some controversy with some longtime He-Man fans, more episodes are expected to arrive to make up the second half of the first season by the end of the year.

With this new CGI reboot however, many He-Man fans are also seeing some issues. Clownfish TV says it looks like this is just another show painted with a “He-Man coat of paint”. They feel that the original He-Man series, which featured hyper-masculinity, was too “problematic” for Netflix. See if you agree with their assessment.

Is this another misstep by Netflix, or is it intentional? Netflix’s He-Man and the Masters of the Universe will debut on the streamer September 16, 2021.
