The launch trailer for the mystery game Twelve Minutes sees James McAvoy and Daisy Ridley trying to figure their way out of a dangerous time loop.

Twelve Minutes, an adventure mystery game from Annapurna Interactive, released its official launch trailer.

The trailer sees a wife (Daisy Ridley) and her husband, Aaron (James McAvoy) sitting down for dinner. The wife is about to inform Aaron that she’s pregnant, but then he reveals he already knows… because he’s lived this moment before. Aaron is trapped in a time loop, forced to relive the events of the evening which culminate in a detective (Willem Dafoe) breaking into the couple’s home, arresting the wife for murder and beating Aaron to death.

Luis Antonio, an artist who previously worked on games like Max Payne 3 and The Witness, first announced Twelve Minutes at PAX East 2015. He and his team went on to refine the game over several years and reintroduced the updated version at E3 2019. It was also spotlighted recently at the Tribeca Film Festival’s first-ever Tribeca Games Selections.

Antonio has stated that his intention with Twelve Minutes was to explore the consequences of decision-making and to play off the use of time-loops inherent in most games. He also described the game as a mix of Groundhog DayRear Window and Memento. Those who have played the game describe the looping mechanic as being reminiscent of The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask or The Outer Wilds.

The game was initially set within a small neighborhood and would feature a 24-hour time loop. As development progressed, this concept was scaled back to a small apartment suite which allowed Antonio to double down on the game’s focused narrative. Most previews have praised Twelve Minutes for its tight storytelling and compelling characters.

Twelve Minutes will be released on Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC on Aug. 19.
