Trial of Magneto Teases What Happened After Scarlet Witch’s Death

[ad_1]

Scarlet Witch’s death is already hovering over all of the X-Men’s world, but there’s another mystery regarding what really happened after her demise.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for X-Men: The Trial of Magneto #1, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

The death of the Scarlet Witch was the big final moment of the Hellfire Gala, a major shift away from the mutant triumph of terraforming Mars into the new Planet Arakko. Now, the fallout of her demise threatens to upend everything the X-Men and their allies have been working toward. However, there might be additional complications regarding the incident that no one expected.

The mystery surrounding the death of the Scarlet Witch has just been severely complicated by what comes after her demise in X-Men: The Trial Of Magneto #1 by Leah Williams, Lucas Werneck, Edgar Delgado, and VC’s Clayton Cowles– and what Krakoa seems to be doing with it.

The Scarlet Witch came to Krakoa at the invitation of Magneto during the course of the Hellfire Gala, seemingly hoping to settle their lingering differences. But by the next morning, her body was discovered by Eye-Boy, Prodigy, and her son Speed, apparently strangled to death. The investigation has been primarily centered on who could have committed such a crime, with the autopsy and the examination of the crime scene leading many of Krakoa’s defenders to assume Magneto was the guilty party. Notably, the Quiet Council even discusses bringing her back using Cerebro and the Five, but elect to instead keep the truth of resurrection a secret and instead allow her to remain dead, despite the furious indignation of Magneto.

But as Speed and Prodigy discover, there may be more to Wanda’s death than anyone fully realizes. Looking for Speed after leaving her autopsy, Prodigy ends up finding his boyfriend in the same room with her body. Speed tells Prodigy he just couldn’t bear to leave her alone and discovered her body gone, seemingly absorbed by the vines and plant life of Krakoa. Prodigy is shocked and embraces Tommy as the vines seem to further surround them, a mesh of brown and red amidst the green. It appears that the Scarlet Witch has been absorbed by Krakoa to an extent and that she’s having some sort of effect across the globe. In Manhattan, the Krakoan Gates are revealed to be growing ever bloom blossom, a rare kind of fauna that was also Scarlet Witch’s favorite kind of flower.

The issue ends with Scarlet Witch apparently in the plane of existence after death, experiencing a terrible wound at the hands of a mysterious figure in a white cloak. She realizes she’s been killed, but as her blood turns to rose petals and her white suit turns scarlet, Wanda notes that she is not truly dead. The plant life surrounding her further suggests a connection to Krakoa, which may be the key to either restoring her life or at the very least bringing her back to the world in some capacity. Due to her mystical nature and her reality-altering abilities — as well as her importance as a Nexus Being — it’s possible that Krakoa is doing its best to protect a crucial part of the ecosystem.

The seemingly mystical nature of her demise and what her spirit is going through further suggests that Wanda might not be as dead as the world believes. This could give her the chance to come back to life and identify her attacker, condemning or exonerating Magneto in the process. There are numerous questions to still to be asked about what happened to Wanda and what has become of her now that she’s “dead,” but hopefully, the truth can be discovered before the wrong mutant suffers punishment.
