The Transformers: The Movie introduces a new villain named Galvatron, and while Megatron is still a fan-favorite, Galvatron is a better leader.
When Transformers’ Megatron was in command of the Decepticons, he ruled over his subordinates with an iron fist. While he wasn’t oppressive, he also wasn’t kind. He often took his frustrations out on Starscream, who consistently questioned and tried to overthrow his leadership. Megatron was also an impulsive leader and used his strategic prowess to orchestrate schemes to steal Energon or attack the Autobots. That being said, his plans also end in explosions and failure. While Galvatron isn’t as lucky in terms of ultimate victory, his feats and leadership skills are far greater than Megatron’s.
Many of the beloved characters from the show’s first two seasons were unceremoniously killed on- or off-screen in The Transformers: The Movie, released 35 years ago today. However, while some were killed, others were upgraded. An example of this is Megatron and his minions, as they became the trio Galvatron, Cyclonus and Scourge. Almost immediately, Galvatron earned his place as a superior leader by cleaning up the messes left behind by Megatron.
Galvatron’s first action as the new leader of the Decepticons was to kill Starscream. Not only did this show how ruthless he was, but it also showed how he wouldn’t stand for insubordination, like Megatron did. Galvatron was a leader who had no time for games and hunted down the remaining Autobots and the Matrix of Leadership. During the onslaught, he commanded Cyclonus to attack Hot Rod and Kup’s ship, taking them down. It’s one of the many times Galvatron’s leadership skills yielded definitive results, thanks to his loyal minions.
Cyclonus and Scourge acted as the left and right hand of Galvatron, enacting his will with the same brutality as their leader. Cyclonus was a skilled warrior and the most loyal to Galvatron. Together, the duo gunned down Ultra Magnus, killing him and taking the Matrix in the process. Meanwhile, even though he’s arrogant, Scourge was equally loyal to Galvatron, even if he occasionally complained over his orders.
Galvatron was also a master at the long game. Where Megatron often grew impatient at the speed of certain plans, Galvatron could wait for the moment to strike. Both Galvatron and Megatron refused to answer to anyone but themselves, and even though Galvatron acted as a slave to Unicron, that didn’t mean he wasn’t always scheming. For example, the moment he obtained the Matrix of Leadership, he turned on his master, threatening to use the device to kill him. While he failed at the hands of Rodimus Prime, it was a great display of foresight and power on Galvatron’s part.
Though he didn’t carry the same iconography or weight as Megatron, Galvatron was superior in his skills as a leader. He eliminated any potential threats with extreme prejudice, and he commanded a loyal group of followers ready to die for him. All of these skills, coupled with the power of Megatron, and Galvatron became a threat that any one of his enemies was right to fear.
