Extreme Carnage has just brought the titular villain face-to-face with his own offspring for the first in a very long time, which nearly killed him.

Carnage has made a shocking return to the spotlight, and although he has been largely operating from the shadows, the impact of his actions is already being felt all throughout the Marvel Universe. This has been helped in no small part by Carnage’s access to his own sort of symbiote Hive within the Void. It’s through this Void that he has been able to call on his symbiote brethren to join his army and spread his horrifying message It’s in that same space where he has met a brutal end at the jaws of his own spawn.
Toxin and his new host, the young Bren Waters, already have enough to worry about with the current anti-alien sentiment that has taken over and made them fear for their safety. Unfortunately, they are given a whole new set of concerns when a familiar thrumming rings out through their ears, pulling Toxin deep into the Void in Extreme Carnage: Toxin by Steve Orlando, Gerardo Sandoval, Danilo S. Beyruth, Victor Nava, Chris Sotomayor and VC’s Cory Petit. It’s there in Carnage’s part of the symbiote Hive where the two come face-to-face for the first time in a very long time. Unlike the other symbiotes that Carnage has reached out to, Toxin manages to resist his progenitor’s influence. This only further fuels Carnage’s rage, leading him to tear Toxin’s head from his body, but of course that is hardly enough to keep a good symbiote down.
Ever since his first appearance in 2004’s Venom Vs. Carnage #2 by Peter Milligan and Clayton Crain, Toxin has been the target of much of Carnage’s violent tendencies. As with all symbiotes, Toxin was born with more potential than Carnage, and as such Carnage has made it his mission from the very beginning to end Toxin’s life. In fact, the last time that Toxin seemingly lost his life was in the service of preventing Chthon from summoning dark elder gods, something that Carnage had put into motion himself. That and the myriad of other devastating moments that Carnage has put his spawn through have left an irreparable mark on Toxin, and it’s that unwavering faith in Carnage’s cruelty that pushes Toxin to consume the villain entirely from within the Void.
Even though he had been reduced to a severed head, Toxin still managed to sprout massive fangs from the bottom of his neck and tear through Carnage until there was nothing left. As he later explains to Anti-Venom and Silence, this isn’t anything to out of the ordinary, though he doesn’t seem to understand the significance of what he has accomplished.
Toxin hasn’t just put Carnage in his place on the battlefield, he has cut the serial killer symbiote off from drawing in any further followers of his own kind through the Void. By severing that connection, Toxin may have just given the heroes a fighting chance against whatever numbers Carnage has now rather than fighting an ever-growing army of demented symbiotes and their unwitting hosts. While they don’t have the greatest father-son relationship in the Marvel Universe, the one that exists between Carnage and Toxin has at least reaffirmed both of their places in it. Fortunately for everyone else, Toxin’s is about as far from Carnage’s as possible.
