Top Gun: Maverick Streaming Date Still Undecided; May Be Delayed
Things didn’t look good for Top Gun: Maverick when it was repeatedly pushed back, with such significant setbacks typically resulting in a lack of interest from audiences. When it ultimately aired on May 27, though, all of those doubts vanished.
In fact, the huge box office success of Top Gun: Maverick may mean that fans will have to wait a bit longer for the picture to arrive on Paramount+. Despite the fact that many movies still have a 45-day theatrically exclusive window, Paramount chairman Tom Ryan said in a recent interview that no decision has been made on when the high-flying sequel will make its streaming premiere, owing to its prolonged record-breaking run in theaters.
Ryan told Variety:
“I think a year or so ago, there was a lot of discussion about what the right model was for movies to streaming, and we were one of the first, if not the first, to come out with the 45-day post theatrical, which gives a lot of value to the marketing of content and allows you to give it a great theatrical exclusive window, but then bring it quickly to streaming. We haven’t decided on that [the theatrical window for ‘Top Gun: Maverick’] yet.”
Top Gun: Maverick just surpassed both Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Black Panther in its fourth-weekend grossing numbers, so it seems Paramount probably wants to keep their latest blockbuster exclusively in theaters (or at least as long as possible) to keep the cash coming in.
