Meliodas is a difficult character to like as many shonen protagonists can be, with the over-the-top aspects of their personality exaggerated for comedic relief. This is best balanced in The Seven Deadly Sins with the antithesis of a shonen protagonist, Ban, being the group’s bad boy. The two’s relationship allows for a comedic back and forth, with their history providing a depth in character development not often seen in a shonen anime. Like any good shonen friendship Ban and Meliodas have built their relationship on mutual respect for each others fighting ability, constantly trying to one-up the other. Even when Ban is offered the chance to bring back the love of his life by killing Meliodas, Ban can’t go through with it even when Meliodas gives it the okay.
With their shared acknowledgement of their mortality, the two characters often appear toxic to each other, but as almost unkillable beings, it gives Ban and Meliodas humanity in their interactions.
