People tend to confine magical girls to the magical girl genre; however, there are plenty of powerful girls and women that exist outside of the magical girl genre. By expanding the definition of what makes a magical girl, it’s easy to see that there are many other women in anime that qualify.

10 Ai Ohto Fits In Perfectly With Other Magical Girls (Wonder Egg Priority)

Wonder Egg Priority is an anime about a group of girls trying to bring back their friends who committed suicide. It’s a dark story, but magical girl anime are certainly not afraid to have a darker tone. All of the girls featured in this series have magical abilities that they use to fight off monsters known as See-No-Evils and Haters.

The girls even have weapons that transform regular objects into giant weapons. If Ai ever becomes a magical girl she will certainly fit right in with the ones that already exist.

9 Kiki Is Your Quintessential Magical Girl (Kiki’s Delivery Service)

Kiki and Jiji flying from Kiki's Delivery Service

Unsurprisingly, Kiki from Kiki’s Delivery Service is also a magical girl. She is a witch, after all, and has all the powers of a witch, including flying on a broom and traveling with a black cat who talks.

She isn’t fighting monsters or casting spells, but she is using her magic to make deliveries to the people in her city. She is probably the weakest compared to other magical girls, but then again being a magical girl isn’t just about strength, it’s about helping others, which is something Kiki excels at.

8 Kugisaki Is A Magical Girl Who Shouldn’t Be Messed With (Jujutsu Kaisen)

Kugisaki is a badass who doesn’t take mistreatment lying down. She isn’t cute and sparkly like most magical girls, but she definitely has the power to take on monsters like every other magical girl has done before her. Her powers aren’t flashy, but they certainly get the job done. Her cursed doll technique allows her to attack from a distance but also lets her use her enemy’s attacks to her advantage.

She demonstrates this best during her fight in the Death Painting Arc when she stabs herself in the arm with her own nails in order to counteract her opponent. Kugisaki can be a little intense but when it comes to killing monsters, it helps.

7 Genkai Is One Of The Strongest Magical Girls (Yu Yu Hakusho)

Genkai is probably one of the strongest characters who could be considered a magical girl. As a psychic, she has immense reserves of spiritual energy that she uses to take on groups of demons at the same time. She is capable of blasting away opponents without lifting a finger and absorbing her opponent’s energy to use against them.

She even has a type of transformation since her immense power allows her to revert herself back to her strongest state. She may not be fighting demons out of the goodness of her heart but with her strength of character, she is certainly the type of magical girl fans can get behind.

6 Makoto Kowata Is A Helpful Witch (Flying Witch)

Like Kiki, Makoto is a witch who leaves her home so she can hone her skills as a witch. She has similar abilities but is definitely more powerful as she can cast spells and communicate with other magical folks.

She is a bit of an airhead and may lack the resolve necessary to fight other magical creatures, but she has a caring heart and a willingness to help the people around her. She may not be killing curses like Kugisaki or fighting off demons like Genkai, but she certainly knows how to put her magical powers to good use.

5 Noel Fights Dragons With Her Magic (Burn the Witch)

Noel is not just a powerful witch, but she is a member of a protection agency that works in dragon conservation and management. She is tasked with controlling the dragon population in London and protecting the regular citizens who are unable to see magical creatures. She has the typical abilities of a witch-like flight, but she also has several techniques that are unique to her.

One example is her Absolute Dragon Shatter, which is able to completely destroy a target in one shot. With powerful attacks like that, it’s no wonder her job is to protect people from powerful creatures like dragons. She may be more stoic in nature, especially compared to her partner, but she still fits in perfectly as a magical girl.

4 Orihime Uses Time-Warping Magic (Bleach)

Orihime is pretty much in line with what people would expect of a magical girl. She has incredible powers that allow her to turn back time, which she typically uses to heal her comrades.

The source of her power is also a bunch of cute fairy-like creatures, which is very typical of a magical girl. On top of that, she has a kind and bubbly personality and the drive to help people. Her powers grow significantly as the series progresses, which is very typical of a magical girl.

3 Kagome Is A Powerful Priestess (Inuyasha)

Kagome Fires An Arrow In Inuyasha

Kagome starts off the series as your typical high school girl but ends up with the abilities of a powerful Priestess. Since she is the reincarnation of the Priestess Kikyo, Kagome has the same abilities as her, which include firing sacred arrows and sensing demons and sacred objects.

Her origin story alone is similar to that of a magical girl, as she is pulled from her normal life and forced to fight monsters in order to save mankind.

2 Shinobu Kocho Is A Bug Magical User (Demon Slayer)

The Hashira Shinobu Kocho isn’t an obvious example of a magical girl. She is a skilled swordswoman with enhanced physical abilities. She also has medical expertise, which she utilizes with her technique, Insect Breathing. Her abilities aren’t outwardly magica; however, what makes her a magical girl is how she utilizes her weapons.

Instead of cutting off the heads of demons like other Demon Slayers, she uses a modified katana to inject poison into them. That kind of unusual weapon is exactly the type of thing a magical girl would use. Magical girls don’t just use normal weapons or their firsts, they use giant guns, tiaras, and charms. With an unusual blade like Shinobu’s, she fits right in as a magical girl.

1 Lucy Is a Zodiac Mage (Fairy Tail)

Lucy Heartfilia from Fairy Tail winking

Like Orihime, Lucy is another perfect example of a magical girl. She does use magic after all and the way she summons her celestial spirits is very similar to that of a magical girl’s transformation sequence.

She usually doesn’t get involved in fights herself, instead letting the celestial spirits take care of her opponents for her. In a way, it’s very similar to the unusual weapons many magical girls are prone to using. Most of the women in Fairy Tail share some similarities with magical girls but Lucy is definitely the most obvious.
