Spider-Man: No Way Home actor Tom Holland reveals what about Tobey Maguire’s take on the character he’d have liked in his films.
Spider-Man: No Way Home star Tom Holland has revealed what he would have liked his Marvel Cinematic Universe movies to have taken from the trilogy starring Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker.
In a clip from an interview with Jake’s Takes posted to YouTube, Holland talked about his love for the final battle between Green Goblin and Spider-Man in Maguire’s first film. “Something that I really wish we had done with our movies is the kind of tattered suit stuff,” Holland said. “You know how he always has the rips in his costumes and the rips on his mask. I really like that because it brought a kind of realism to the injuries that Spider-Man can get.”
Released in 2002, Spider-Man was directed by Sam Raimi from a script by David Koepp. The movie proved a massive success and grossed more than $821 million against a budget of $139 million. Spider-Man also performed well with critics, and the title currently holds a 90 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Two sequels followed: 2004’s Spider-Man 2 and 2007’s Spider-Man 3. While the former of those two was also a smash-hit with fans and critics, the latter didn’t receive the same accolades as its predecessors. Initially, there were plans for a fourth film, but they were eventually scrapped, and the series was rebooted in 2012 as The Amazing Spider-Man, which starred Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker.
While Holland’s Spider-Man has yet to wear a ripped suit like Maguire’s, he will get to take on some of his villains. The main plot of No Way Home sees Peter trying to hide his secret identity with a spell from Doctor Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) after it was revealed to the world in 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home. However, things go awry, and Peter is forced to fight a number of villains from across the multiverse. Those include Spider-Man‘s Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe), Spider-Man 2‘s Otto Octavius/Doctor Octopus (Alfred Molina) and Spider-Man 3‘s Flint Mark/Sandman (Thomas Haden Church).
As No Way Home will see Spider-Man facing off against other franchise’s villains, there have been persistent rumors Maguire and Garfield will reprise their roles. Currently, those rumors have not been officially confirmed. For his part, Garfield has repeatedly downplayed the idea that he’s appearing in No Way Home. Still, such denials are common for major cameos in MCU movies.
Directed by Jon Watts, No Way Home releases on Dec. 17 and also stars Jacob Batalon as Ned Leeds, Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan, Marisa Tomei as May Parker and Zendaya as MJ. Tickets for No Way Home are on sale now
