Spider-Man: No Way Home’s Tom Holland says he wishes he had called Andrew Garfield before taking over the role of Peter Parker in 2016.
While Tom Holland and Andrew Garfield’s respective versions of Peter Parker/Spider-Man got to bond on-screen in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, Holland admits that he wishes he had reached out to Garfield immediately after landing the role several years ago.
Following Tobey Maguire’s stint portraying Peter Parker in director Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy from 2002 to 2007, Garfield took over the role in director Marc Webb’s 2012 reboot The Amazing Spider-Man. Garfield reprised his version of Peter in 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2. However, plans for a third film Garfield-led Spider-Man film fell through — and a mere two years later, Spidey joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, with Holland taking over the role.
Garfield finally got to play Peter Parker again in No Way Home, to much fanfare. “I could not be happier for him,” Holland told The Hollywood Reporter while discussing the positive reception to Garfield’s performance. “Something I can look back on now with a little bit of clarity and regret is that I never called him when I took over as Spider-Man.”
Holland elaborated, “Had someone said to me after my second movie that I was done and this other kid was taking over, I would’ve been heartbroken. So looking back, I wish I had the chance to make amends with him, but this film was our opportunity. It was not only an opportunity for him to make peace with the character and the studio, but it was also an opportunity for me and him to have this moment where we realize we could share this thing.”
Holland went on to discuss the No Way Home scene in which Garfield’s Spider-Man saves Michelle “MJ” Jones-Watson (Zendaya), thus redeeming himself for failing to save Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. “The look on his face when he saves Zendaya [MJ] is totally genuine, and I’m really proud of him,” he said. “I’m really chuffed that he got this opportunity to win back the world and for people to be reminded that his Spider-Man movies are fantastic and brilliant in their own right.”
Following his debut as Peter Parker in Civil War, Holland subsequently reprised the role in 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War, 2019’s Avengers: Endgame and 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home. Holland had his sixth outing as Spidey in No Way Home, which broke open the multiverse, allowing him to team up with Maguire and Garfield’s Spider-Men. The 2021 MCU film marked Garfield’s first time playing Spider-Man in seven years and Maguire’s first time playing the character in 14 years.
