Spider-Man: No Way Home’s Tom Holland comments on teaming up once more with Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, saying “it could happen again.”
Spider-Man: No Way Home brought three generations of Spider-Men together — and according to Tom Holland, it could potentially happen again.
Prior to No Way Home‘s release this past December, the idea of Holland uniting on-screen with fellow Spideys Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield had floated around for a while, but seemed unlikely. “It was one of those things — it was a an idea for a long time and an idea that always seemed impossible,” Holland told Variety. Now that it’s happened once, however, it’s easier to imagine it could happen again. “Could it happen?,” Holland continued, “Of course it could happen. We’ve done it once before. Will it happen? I don’t know.”
No Way Home marked Holland’s third outing as Peter Parker in a solo Spider-Man movie following his debut as the character in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. The movie also marked the returns of Maguire and Garfield, who last played the role of Peter Parker in 2007 and 2014, respectively. Despite Sony and Marvel’s efforts to keep Maguire and Garfield’s reprisals a secret, their involvement was the subject of numerous rumors and leaks leading up to No Way Home’s premiere.
While No Way Home has been a major success for Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures, the future of the franchise is less certain, as no further Spider-Man films have been announced as of yet. When Holland was asked directly about his future as Spider-Man, he admitted that he didn’t know what was in the pipeline and suggested he wasn’t ready to hang up his Spidey suit just yet. “But if it’s time for me to say goodbye, then I will do so proudly,” he said.
Shortly before No Way Home was released, franchise producer Amy Pascal suggested that future plans did involve Holland. “We are getting ready to make the next Spider-Man movie with Tom Holland and Marvel,” Pascal said. She also stated that plans called for another three movies from Marvel and Sony, though later walked this back. In the meantime, Spider-Man: Freshman Year, an animated series that serves as a prequel to Holland’s Spider-Man films, is currently in the works for Disney+.
Holland may also get the chance to act with Maguire and Garfield again, as both actors have spoken about the possibility of returning as Spider-Man once more. Maguire stopped short of calling his appearance in No Way Home an opportunity to “close the chapter” for his Peter and instead preferred to consider it a “revisit.” Garfield was more explicit on the possibility of a return, saying he was “definitely open to something if it felt right.”
