Todd McFarlane Reveals Gunslinger Spawn’s Starting Power Meter Number

Spawn creator Todd McFarlane showed where Gunslinger Spawn’s power meter will rank ahead of the character’s ongoing solo book debut.

Gunslinger Spawn’s power meter is revealed ahead of his new solo series.

Spawn creator Todd McFarlane teased fans with an upcoming look at the power meter for Gunslinger Spawn. The power meter is a way of measuring the necroplasmic energy that the various Hellspawn characters have left. In the first ever Spawn comic, Al Simmons had a full charge of 9:9:9:9, which slowly depleted over the course of the ensuing 300+ issues. Eventually, the character found a way to recharge in the wake of Spawn #301, something that Gunslinger Spawn will likely want to do too. Ahead of his first issue, Gunslinger Spawn’s meter reads only 0:6:1:3.

While having a low power meter might sound like a death sentence, it doesn’t necessarily mean that Gunslinger Spawn is already walking into the sunset. Necroplasmic energy is used to fuel the iconic symbiote that the Hellspawn wear, so they can extend their afterlife expectancy by using alternative means of fighting their enemies. In the case of Gunslinger Spawn, much of the Western hero’s badass appeal comes from the many weapons and pistols he uses. Since these don’t drain his energy, he’ll likely stick around for quite some time, especially with his historic presale numbers.

Gunslinger Spawn is a new ongoing series by writer Todd McFarlane and artist Brett Booth, featuring backup stories by Aleš Kot, Philip Tan, and Kevin Keane. It spins out of Spawn’s Universe #1, which launched a line of titles that take place within the world of Spawn. However, unlike Spawn and the new King Spawn series, it does not follow Al Simmons. Instead, it focuses on Jeremy Winston, a former preacher from the Old West who gains the powers of the Hellspawn after his family is murdered. The character debuted in 2002’s Spawn #119 and has been a fan-favorite ever since.

The gunslinger version of Spawn will also be featured in December’s The Scorched series, by writer Sean Lewis and artists Stephen Segovia and Paulo Siqueira. It follows a team composed of popular Spawn characters, including Gunslinger Spawn. But unlike Marvel’s Spider-Verse, McFarlane wants to create a whole interconnected universe for these characters to play in. In his own words, “I wanted to expand the universe to fill it with more characters, some of which may be Spawn-related but I’m hoping the vast majority aren’t, in the long run.”

While McFarlane has promoted 2021 as “The Year of Spawn,” the legendary comic creator still plans to give Spawn’s big screen presence a new life in the future. McFarlane has recruited the help of screenwriter Brian Tucker for the long-gestating film and plans on announcing more contributors soon. McFarlane insists this new Spawn movie will not reboot the original New Line production and will instead be used to tell an original story that feels relevant to modern audiences. Maybe with a little luck, that’ll include Gunslinger Spawn.
