Todd McFarlane’s long-awaited live-action “Spawn” remake will be written by Brian Tucker, bringing the project one step closer to completion. Tucker is known best as the scriptwriter for “Broken City,” and Blumhouse will produce with McFarlane, with Carla Hacken serving as executive producer. What’s most interesting is that for this adaptation of his long-running comic, illustrator Todd McFarlane hopes to make the move from comic creator to filmmaker.
This version of Spawn has been in development since 2017, but production has yet to begin for a variety of reasons. It was initially rumored that Jamie Foxx would play the titular vigilante, with Jeremy Renner playing a detective in a supporting role, but it’s unclear whether they’re still engaged now that many years have gone. The performers had committed to join the project based on McFarlane’s initial draft, but they may be asked again once the new screenplay is completed.
The character was created by Todd McFarlane in 1992 and first appeared in Image Comics’ Spawn No. 1. In the comics, he’s presented as Al Simmons, a black ops specialist who’s betrayed, slain, and damned for taking the lives of innocent people. But he strikes a bargain with a demon to return to Earth five years after his death in exchange for one final chance to see his wife, even if it means becoming a Hellspawn.
As a vigilante, Al finds a new purpose in life by putting an end to evil. Many fans may recall that Spawn was originally conceived as a live-action film that debuted in theaters in 1997. The film stars Michael Jai White as Al Simmons and was directed by Mark A. Z. Dippe and written by Alan B. McElroy. It also featured John Leguizamo and Martin Sheen.
In 1997, HBO aired an animated series based on the comicbook. The program, dubbed Todd McFarlane’s Spawn, featured Keith David as the popular character’s voice and gained a fanbase of its own. The series also included the voices of Richard Dysart, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Kath Soucie, Robert Forster, Ming-Na Wen, and James Hong. During its tenure, the show won two Emmys and two Golden Reel Awards.
Meanwhile, McFarlane’s newest Spawn comic, King Spawn, just set sales records. For now, the Spawn movie still has not set a release date or even a production start date. Maybe an experienced director will change Todd’s mind.
