Todd McFarlane is once again paying homage to one of his most iconic comic book covers with an upcoming variant for Spawn #327.
Todd McFarlane paid homage to one of his own iconic covers thanks to an upcoming Spawn variant featuring another classic character.
McFarlane announced the upcoming variant cover for Spawn #327 on Twitter, saying, “Folks! We’ve EXTENDED the deadline to order for SPAWN #327! I shared my work in progress photo the other day and it got a HUGE response (thank you for that)! This is MY cover that is going to press next week. YOU still have time to reserve YOUR copy.” The cover art for this collector’s item issue features Daniel Kilgore, aka Haunt, a supernatural vigilante created by McFarlane and Robert Kirkman, in a pose that has become synonymous with McFarlane’s cover for 1990’s Spider-Man #1. Spawn #327 is set to release on March 2 from Image Comics.

Created by McFarlane and first introduced in 1992’s Spawn #1, the record-breaking series follows former CIA assassin Al Simmons, who was transformed into the titular superpowered antihero after his death, and his endless war against both the demonic and divine. Recently, these opposing forces have each taken a special interest in Daniel Kilgore, aka Haunt, a former priest capable of transforming into his nightmarish alter-ego by bonding with the ghost of his brother. This plotline neatly coincides with the March 2 release of Spawn #327 written by Rory McConville (Write It In Blood) and illustrated by Carlo Barberi (Hulk, Green Lanterns), with main cover art by Don Aguillo.
McFarlane’s variant cover for the issue stars Haunt in a dark recreation of the all-star creator’s cover art for 1990’s Spider-Man #1, which was also written and illustrated by McFarlane. The cover’s menacing, crouched pose is an image that has become iconic to the point that a myriad of other titles have paid homage to it over the years. This will be the second time a Spawn series has homaged the classic Spider-Man artwork, as 1993’s Spawn #8 by McFarlane and Alan Moore featured the titular antihero in the very same pose.
Following his work on Spider-Man #1, McFarlane continued his acclaimed run on the series until Spider-Man #16, going on to co-found Image Comics in 1992 and publish the first issue of Spawn that same year. 2022 marks the 30th anniversary of Image Comics, with 2021 being the most successful year yet for its flagship title, Spawn. On top of that, sales for Gunslinger Spawn #1 marked the biggest superhero launch in 25 years, just ahead of its October 2021 release date.
Fans can look forward to picking up McFarlane’s latest take on his own iconic work when Spawn #372 hits shelves everywhere comic books are sold on March 2 from Image Comics.
