Titans Reveals Batman’s Sick Training Methods for Dick and Jason

Season 3 of Titans reveals more insight into Batman’s terrible parenting as we discover Bruce’s most sadistic act and a deadly new base.

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Titans Season 3, Episode 4, “Blackfire,” available now on HBO Max.

Season 3 of Titans continues to show what a terrible father Bruce Wayne (Iain Glen) has been. The revelation of a sickening contract he made Dick (Brenton Thwaites) and Jason (Curran Walters) sign, promising never to be afraid of anything, compounds why they mentally broke under the Dark Knight. Sadly, while Dick’s maintained his sanity, Bruce’s conditioning has pushed a reborn Jason down a violent path as Red Hood. Insight into Bruce’s parenting now gets even worse in the fourth episode as we discover Bruce’s most sadistic act and a deadly new base.

It’s revealed in a cabin in the woods outside of Bristol City, which initially seems like a retreat where families would go to get away from the hustle and bustle of the world. Dick uses it after realizing Dr. Jonathan Crane (aka Scarecrow) is working with Jason, faking an attack in Arkham so he could get transported to Blackgate.

It’s all so Red Hood could break Crane out, which results in Dick hijacking the mission and kidnapping Crane himself. They go on a road trip and hole up in the forest where Dick confirms that this cottage is where Bruce brought them. The twist is, Jason told Crane everything about the Bat-family, so Dick doesn’t hide that Bruce trained his Robins here.

The doctor tries to psychoanalyze Dick and get him to dispel Bruce’s methods, getting the ex-Boy Wonder to admit that the “fear is your friend” mantra wasn’t healthy. He confirms Bruce once left him alone in the dark, dreary woods, with the shocking flashback showing the kid outracing a wolf, only to enter the cottage with a bloody knife and the wolf’s head. Crane’s disgusted as the boy could have been killed, but Dick makes it clear that he enjoyed it as the wolf was the one who should have been afraid.

It explains why the Robins have lethal tendencies as Bruce had them straddling the murder line in order to survive. What’s also shocking is when Dick’s plan comes to fruition, luring Jason to come get Crane, as Scarecrow tries to escape, he’s electrocuted and knocked out cold by an invisible fence.

It leaves us wondering what other traps and weapons Bruce had around here, as Barb and the Gotham cops confirm it’s off the grid. Dick had Crane caught in a net earlier when he tried to run but this fence confirms there are high-tech secrets lingering. It continues to paint an ominous picture of the Caped Crusader and his group, and if someone as sick as Crane could think this is a problem, clearly Bruce has issues.

The first four episodes of Titans Season 3 are available now on HBO Max. Episode 5 will release on Aug. 26.
