Titans: Nightwing Has His Reason to Kill Red Hood

[ad_1]

Let’s dissect Season 3 of Titans and how, while the latest episode gives Nightwing a reason to kill Red Hood, he’d be wrong in his assumptions.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Titans Season 3, Episode 8, “Home,” available now on HBO Max.

As Season 3 of Titans rolls on, Nightwing struggles to find hope when it comes to Jason Todd. He doesn’t want to give into his murderous side, especially knowing how it broke Bruce as the Bat, forcing him into retirement, but after Hawk’s death, Dick’s walking a fine line with his rage. Unfortunately, the latest episode just gave Dick the ultimate reason to kill Red Hood, but he’s wrong for thinking it’s valid.

Dick’s going through a lot in this episode as his trauma haunts him. After tracking Jason on his bike, he gets hit by a car and hallucinates, seeing the Bat-symbol in an eye test, dreaming of his younger self and reliving moments steeped in regret.

He’s traumatized by what the Boy Wonder mantle did to him and Jason, worried they were always meant to become killers. It gets so testy, Gar has to remind the crew Jason can’t be killed, as he tries to negotiate a truce and come home. Beast Boy reveals, despite Superboy and Blackfire wanting Jason taken out, he and Conner were given a second chance without question after being mind-controlled by CADMUS in Season 2. Starfire agrees, warning Dick they can’t cross that line, as they’re a family.

Titans Season 3, Episode 8, still featuring Ryan Potter, Joshua Orpin, Damaris Lewis and Anna Diop.

Unfortunately, it culminates in Tim Drake tracking Jason himself after his family is shot, which leads to Scarecrow shooting Tim. Jason finds the boy bleeding out, admitting all he wanted was to become a Robin in the name of justice. However, Jason flees as he realizes the Titans are en route. They catch Jason leaving into the nearby pump station, which has Dick believing Jason lied to him. He knows Jason’s killed many civilians and thinks this was a setup to hurt the Titans again, proving collateral damage and casualties are part of Red Hood’s fun and games.

Nightwing blames himself as well, as he shooed Tim away which led to this, and the breaking point comes as he hallucinates himself dying here with the Robin suit. As such, with Scarecrow tricking Starfire into poisoning Gotham’s water supply, Nightwing views Jason as irredeemable for partnering with the villain and now trying to murder Tim.

Whether or not the medics are able to save Tim, Dick’s fierce scowl suggests he may finally be embracing the opportunity to do what Batman did to Joker. He doesn’t care if Scarecrow is manipulating Jason anymore; deep down he wants to kill his former brother so that Red Hood’s body count can end for good.

The first eight episodes of Titans Season 3 are available now on HBO Max. Episode 9 will release Sept. 23.
