Titans Created a Massive (Secret) Identity Crisis With Nightwing

[ad_1]

As Nightwing’s team aims to stop Red Hood in Gotham, Season 3 of Titans creates a massive secret identity crisis that it’s trying very hard to ignore.

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Titans Season 3, Episode 4, “Blackfire,” available now on HBO Max.

Season 3 of Titans has found Dick and Barbara all about business, working on stopping Jason Todd’s bloodbath as the Red Hood. They’re doing their best to ensure a safe Gotham emerges without a Batman around, but thanks to carelessness from both, the show creates a massive secret identity crisis that it’s trying to ignore.

Dick spent time in Detroit as a cop before starting the Titans in San Francisco. They were very popular there, becoming media darlings before coming to Gotham to sort out the Red Hood dilemma. The problem is Dick and Barb are doing a poor job at covering up his identity.

Brenton Thwaites as Dick Grayson/Nightwing in Titans Season 3, Episode 4, "Blackfire."

He’s always at Gotham City Police Department, working one-on-one with her. Even her staff notices something’s up, as they’re intimately dissecting cases. Barb eventually grants Nightwing access to one of Red Hood’s pawns, while also giving the civilian Dick access to Dr. Jonathan Crane in Arkham Asylum. It’s easy to reconcile the two, even if it’s just visually.

Notably, when Dick becomes this private contractor Barb uses, that’s when Nightwing and the Titans show up. Throw in the fact that Nightwing was at the bank when Red Hood staged a robbery and how he worked with the Commissioner to pull back officers, and it’s obvious he’s Dick. Plus, take into account how Bruce Wayne is MIA while the Dark Knight is also out of the picture, and that’s further evidence pointing toward a massive secret identity issue for the Bat-family.

Dick kidnapping Scarecrow during a transfer to Blackgate Penitentiary also spells it all out. He’s in his civilian clothing and caught on camera at the scene. Barb eventually sends a chopper to Bruce’s cabin, where another error’s made. The footage streamed to Barb’s team shows Nightwing fighting Red Hood, which is the smoking gun.

A still from Titans Season 3, Episode 2, "Red Hood" featuring the reveal of Curran Walters as Jason Todd/Red Hood.

To top it off, there are a couple caveats with Jason himself. He spilled the beans to Crane, selling out Bruce as Batman and what he did to nurture the Bat-family. With this info from his successor, Scarecrow can now offer the intel to villains or the media to bring down Bruce’s empire. What further complicates things is when Jason was beaten to death by the Joker, Robin’s body was taken to a morgue. Thus, there must be official documentation to log his corpse in. There’s no way the cops or the city’s legal framework would have a John Doe in the system.

Plus, Bruce had the body brought to his mansion for burial, so there must be a paper trail that will confirm this dead Robin is another son he adopted. With no Jason around, it’s clear Bruce has a link to the Boy Wonder. Ultimately, Titans plays it too loose with all these tidbits, but it doesn’t seem like anyone in Gotham is picking up on them.

The first four episodes of Titans Season 3 are available now on HBO Max. Episode 5 will release on Aug. 26.
