Let’s dissect the latest episode of Titans, which has Superboy unlocking his inner Lex Luthor after a very steamy moment with Blackfire.
WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Titans Season 3, Episode 7, “51%,” available now on HBO Max.
One of Lex Luthor’s biggest weapons has always been his confidence and swagger. He’s used it to mentally play heroes like Superman, Batman and the rest of the Justice League, while currying public favor and working the political angle. Even the sassy Lois Lane has struggled to contend with his cheekiness at times, a reminder that Lex can be a playboy like Bruce Wayne when he’s not in business mode. Interestingly, while the megalomaniac hasn’t physically appeared in Titans yet, Season 3 does have Superboy unlocking his inner Lex, becoming super confident after a very steamy moment with Blackfire.
It happens when Nightwing and Co. raid Scarecrow’s lab to destroy the anti-fear toxin being mass produced to wreck the city. Blackfire has officially joined the family so Dick has all his heavy hitters, razing the place and sending Scarecrow into despair.
Blackfire channels her cosmic powers, with even Krypto getting in on the act, using heat vision to fry up some thugs. Superboy also gets to flex his muscles, tossing goons away and flying off with a couple thugs before dropping back down to Earth. Impressed with their synergy, he compliments Blackfire, as its taken some time to acclimate to each other and become a well-oiled machine. She then approaches, tossing the compliment back at him. She mentions how impressed she is by his super-strength, speed, hearing and powers in general, seductively eyeing him from head to toe, before asking what else he can do.
Usually nervous, Conner finds his bravado as he responds, “I’d love to show you sometime,” giving her a decisive look. It proves he’s ready for the big leagues, as he used to be anxious around her. He’s no longer that shy person gawking at her in her Tamaranean suit.
Instead, he’s enjoying the attention. He believes in himself, so he flirts back and speeds around Gotham to get them food and drinks to celebrate. This is exactly what he needs, especially considering Blackfire and Superboy have already discussed family and how embracing all aspects of one’s life can help harness your strengths.
Superboy hinted back then that he wanted to find more independence as Superman’s more or less abandoned him, so this proves he’s moving away from the Man of Steel’s shadow. Given Conner’s already a scientific genius, building weapons and whatnot, this shot of confidence can make him more like his other dad, reassured and no longer caring what Clark Kent thinks of him. It’d truly help him find his voice and overall identity, but hopefully, not in an evil way like Lex would like.
The first seven episodes of Titans Season 3 are available now on HBO Max. Episode 8 will be released Sept. 16.
