A resurfaced series of photos on Twitter tells the pictorial story of an army of Star Wars action figures building a full-sized Christmas tree.
A meticulously constructed set of home photos tells the pictorial story of a band of Stormtroopers, led by Darth Vader himself, celebrating Christmas in a way that’s unusual even by Star Wars standards.
The images resurfaced in a Twitter thread posted by user @lucysaunderspr, who introduced them with the caption, “& its time for this again … long thread I’m afraid but worth it.” The 12-inch Hasbro figures were originally set up and photographed by Phil Shearrer and his son Kyle in 2015, with their project going viral at the time and popping up again on Christmas Day 2021.
The series begins with a few Stormtrooper workers scouting out a location and then carrying in materials to set up a Christmas tree with a decorative base. Each of the action figures, taken from Shearrer’s personal collection, is carefully posed to look like it’s making intentional movements and gestures.
Right from the beginning, subplots to the story can be spotted in the background, with one of the troops taking off his helmet to slack off, and later photos showing him being punished by a supervisor. There’s also an unfortunate incident involving a metal fork and an outlet.
At one point, a small dog comes to assist, just the right scale to provide a convenient mount reminiscent of the exotic alien fauna that never fails to appear in all of the Star Wars films.
Near the end of the thread, Darth Vader joins the task force — as an overseer, of course, but he appears to be satisfied with the work that’s been done. The tree is successfully constructed, and the Stormtroopers presumably move on to their next duty.
Although the role of Stormtroopers in Star Wars media is generally villainous, their hapless obedience and inability to aim their weapons effectively can give them a comical tone. They may not be the most skilled of soldiers, but it turns out they’re perfect for some holiday fun.
