Thor remains troubled by visions of Thanos emerging victorious over the Marvel heroes…and the visions are getting worse every single day.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Thor #16, on sale now from Marvel.
For some time now, Thor has dealt with a troubling vision of a Marvel Universe conquered by Thanos. And while Thor has had plenty of action to keep him occupied since first receiving this premonition of a cataclysmic showdown to come, his subconscious keeps coming back to the cosmic supervillain and the epic defeat awaiting the Avengers. This development has since been made all the more troubling by Thor’s visions not only becoming more frequent but also more vividly disturbing as this dark destiny looms on the horizon.
Thor’s initial vision came while he confronted the Black Winter, shortly after ascending to the throne of Asgard and briefly serving as a herald for Galactus. In this vision, Thor reigned triumphantly over the fallen heroes of the Marvel Universe, not only wielding all six Infinity Stones but also having the gems embedded into Mjolnir. More troubling, many of the familiar Marvel heroes stood behind the Mad Titan as zombies, leering at the defeated Thor as the dark, possible future for the universe haunted the God of Thunder. And in Thor #16 by Donny Cates, Michele Bandini, Elisabetta D’Amico, Matt Wilson and VC’s Joe Sabino, Thor’s visions of Thanos go a few disturbing steps farther.
While catching up with Jane Foster back in Manhattan, Thor not only recounts the visions of Thanos he has had to her but that the visions now end with the Mad Titan crushing Thor under his boot in pointed disgust. Even more troubling, Thor reveals to Jane that every time he tries to sleep, he sees this vision in horrifying detail. Thor attributes these recurring nightmares as the product of staring deep into the Black Winter, with its primordial energies providing a glimpse into how he will eventually die. And as Jane openly ponders what Thor has shared with her, he expresses concern that this prophecy is quickly becoming a reality.
Ever since claiming the throne of Asgard as its new All-Father, Thor’s control over Mjolnir has diminished, with speculation mounting that Thor’s commitments as king leave him unable to wield the hammer. This has resulted in numerous individuals discovering the ability to lift the hammer, potentially leaving it vulnerable to Thanos. Meanwhile, Thanos himself has resurfaced as well, menacing the Eternals now but sure to quickly expand his sights to the rest of the heroes as the Infinity Stones reappear around the Marvel Universe.
From invading symbiotes to wayward alter egos, Thor has been focused elsewhere during his reign over Asgard, even while being troubled about the doom coming for him and his friends. Thor hasn’t shared this vision with anyone but Jane Foster yet, but given the enormity of the prophecy, he should probably check in with his fellow Avengers to give them the proper heads up. In the meantime, the Marvel Universe is steadily marching towards this rematch with the Mad Titan, armed to the hilt with the universe’s most powerful weapons and an army of the dead at his command for a massive showdown.
