Thor: Love and Thunder has a new logo, and in addition to acknowledging the film’s title, it might hold another meaning for Thor and Jane Foster.
The upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder has an appropriate new logo — and it’s heartbreaking.
Marvel Studios post-production coordinator Jim Velasco tweeted an image of a black baseball cap bearing the new logo Monday, a simple schematic featuring a lightning bolt appearing to cleave through a heart. The image acknowledges both the love and thunder alluded to in the film’s title. The back side of the crew-only cap bears the film title’s logo.
“I love the Thor: Love and Thunder crew hat because the design on the front is very reminiscent of Owen Hart’s original heel logo,” Velasco said in his tweet. The late Hart was a Canadian professional wrestler, known for a similar insignia he wore bearing a lightning bolt piercing a heart.
Thor: Love and Thunder reportedly features Thor’s one-time love interest Jane Foster, played by Natalie Portman in the films, taking over the role of God of Thunder. In 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok, which did not feature Portman’s character, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor revealed he and Jane were no longer romantically involved. In addition to the love and thunder motif, the new logo could also acknowledge Thor’s potentially broken heart.
Jane Foster temporarily became the new God of Thunder beginning in 2013 during writer Jason Aaron’s run on Marvel’s Thor: God of Thunder. During Aaron’s stint, Thor simply became known as Odinson while Jane become the wielder of Thor’s hammer Mjolnir — all while Jane was battling cancer in her mortal form.
Directed by Taika Waititi, Thor: Love and Thunder stars Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, Natalie Portman as Jane Foster, Jaimie Alexander as Lady Sif, Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, Dave Bautista as Drax, Karen Gillan as Nebula and Christian Bale as Gorr the God Butcher. The film arrives in theaters May 6, 2022.
