In Thor #13, a surprising MCU Asgardian returns, with a new look and a massive weapon which completely changes the character’s role.
Warning: The following contains spoilers for Thor #16, on sale now from Marvel.
In the vast reaches of the Marvel Universe, Asgard contains many of the fiercest warriors that have ever lived. Over many centuries, Thor and his kin have proven their mettle in battle time and again. In Thor #16, by Donny Cates, Michele Bandini, Elisabetta D’Amico, Matt Wilson and VC’s Joe Sabino, an MCU Asgardian makes her shocking return as a fierce warrior: Thor’s step-mother, Freyja.
Freyja makes her grand re-entry in the Forests of Vanaheim, where Thor and Odin are called for a meeting. The father and son duo have no idea who had called them there, until they are attacked by a vicious beast. Backed into a corner, Thor and Odin can barely hold off the creature on their own, especially since Thor doesn’t have his hammer on him. Suddenly, the beast is decapitated before their eyes. When the smoke clears, Freyja stands before the two All-Fathers, alongside Thor’s sister, Angela. Apparently, Freyja had summoned Thor and Odin to the Forests of Vanaheim so that they could discuss Thor’s recent difficulties with his hammer.
Of course, Freyja’s reasoning for calling this meeting is clearly overshadowed by her new appearance. For what might be the first time, Freyja is adorned in warrior’s garb, looking much like a Valkyrie. Freyja’s armor is incredibly detailed, with gauntlets around her arms, armor for her legs, a helmet, a chest piece and various weapons on her person. This isn’t even mentioning the massive sword which Freyja holds above her head, which she used to brutally decapitate the creature attacking Thor and Odin. Juxtaposed with her daughter, Angela, Freyja fits right in, looking like more of a hardened warrior than she ever has before.
Freyja looks very different than when she was last seen, at the end of “War of the Realms.” After this monumental event, Thor was declared All-Father of Asgard, while Odin and Freyja decided to take some time off to reconnect. Yet by 2021’s Thor #13, by Donny Cates, Nic Klein, Matt Wilson and VC’s Joe Sabino, it was revealed that Freyja had left Odin. Moreover, it was unclear exactly where she’d gone, or what Freyja had been up to since then.
It should be interesting to learn exactly what happened to Freyja while she was away, as something significant must have happened to change her appearance so radically. Traditionally, Freyja has had a more regal appearance, especially when she was the All-Mother of Asgard. As a skilled sorceress, Freyja has never been one for a very physically combative role until now either. With her return, however, Freyja is carrying multiple swords and adorned in a warrior’s armor. Just based on her appearance, it seems as if Freyja has experienced quite a lot.
After relinquishing her role as one of Asgard’s rulers, Freyja has been given a lot of freedom. Just as Odin has changed in his time away from Asgard, so has Freyja, albeit a bit more dramatically. Perhaps spending time with Angela has informed some of this change, considering how close they seem at the end of Thor #16. It’s true that Freyja still probably has the same regal qualities and magical skills that she possessed before. Now, however, it appears that Freyja has been dramatically changed by her time away from her throne, altering much of her appearance and identity. As time goes on, it will be interesting to see exactly how much Freyja has changed, and how this changes her role in the Marvel Universe.
