When the Ultimate Fantastic Four messed with time, they created an Ultimate Marvel Universe where Thor was elected president of the United States.
While the Ultimate Marvel Universe was originally created to cut down on the complex continuity that grew in the main Marvel Universe, that simplified world eventually inspired its own offshoot alternate realities. When the Ultimate Fantastic Four invented a time machine and decided to use it to change the circumstances of their origin, it did exactly that.
But in the process, they created a strange new timeline, where everyone had superpowers. And long before Loki had political aspirations of his own, Thor was elected to serve as the President of the United States in this new world.
The story arc began in Mark Millar and Greg Land’s Ultimate Fantastic Four #27, where Ben Grimm stewed over his transformation into the rocky-hided Thing. Unable to cure the Thing’s condition, the rest of the team resolved instead to ensure that he was never transformed in the first place. Constructing a time machine and going back to the point of their origin so that the Negative Zone experiment that gave them their powers would proceed as planned, the super team at first appeared wildly more successful than they could have planned.
With no knowledge of their previous selves, the super team celebrated along with the rest of the world in a new age of prosperity and peace ushered in by President Thor. The Ultimate Marvel Universe gave Thor a more political bent and portrayed the god as a socially-conscious progressive voice often rebelling against the governmental status quo. The new Commander in Chief seemed to be quite the progressive step for the new society, but he was far from the only character affected by their actions.
The Fantastic Four’s experiments brought about a technological revolution through the inventions that resulted naturally from their Negative Zone experiment, and from the Skrulls that it put them into contact with. Empowered with teleportation technology thanks to the experiment’s success, humanity soon discovered a race of aliens known as Skrulls who appeared to benevolently offer them the keys to a utopia. Distributing pills to humanity that granted everyone on Earth marvelous powers, the new, forward-thinking world soon elected Thor as their leader as they put the days of strife and starvation behind them.
The ironic twist of the story is that the one human not to take the pill was Ben Grimm. Successfully restored to his human form and without the urge to see what superpowers were like, Grimm ended up saving humanity when it turned out the Skrulls were planning to take over the world. The same pills that granted everyone powers killed billions within moments, and it was only through nabbing access to a time machine that Grimm was able to set back time to how it was originally.
After his changes the world of Ultimate Marvel restored it to its proper timeline, Thor never considered office again. The more the Thunder God returned to his Asgardian roots the less involved with human politics he became. However, his fellow Ultimates member Captain America eventually was elected president when the Ultimate Marvel United States teetered on the edge of collapse. As he walked the Union back from the edge during his term, Thor proudly served alongside him, helping craft a better America.
Eventually, the Thing even gained the ability to return to his human form, so the FF got what they wanted, even without making Thor the president.
