This Friday: Documentary ‘Boris Karloff: The Man Behind the Monster’

Boris Karloff: The Man Behind The Monster from Shout! Studios tells the story of how William Henry Pratt, a half-Indian youngster from Surrey, became Boris Karloff, the renowned Universal horror star. From Frankenstein to How the Grinch Stole Christmas, the film touches on some of his most famous roles. The film, directed by Thomas Hamilton, also looks at his legacy in horror and beyond, with interviews with directors he influenced such as Guillermo del Toro, Joe Dante, John Landis, Roger Corman, and Norman Jewison. “There isn’t a single movie I’ve ever done that isn’t under the shadow that this man casts,” del Toro says in the trailer.

The documentary features clips of Karloff’s performances throughout a six-decade career that changed forever when James Whale cast the character actor as The Monster in 1931’s Frankenstein, and includes exclusive interviews with his daughter Sarah Karloff, as well as the likes of Guillermo del Toro, Ron Perlman, Stefanie Powers, Christopher Plummer, Peter Bogdanovich, John Landis, Lee Grant, Joe Dante, Roger Corman, Norman Jewison, David J. Skal and Gregory W. Mank.
