A handy Mario fan showcases his mechanical prowess with a wickedly fun Waluigi cosplay that comes equipped with a fully functioning electric go-kart.
Since his debut in the Mario franchise in 2000, Waluigi has garnered a cult following, and one crafty fan has taken his cosplay of Luigi’s arch-rival to the next level.
More Tools Than Sense posted his devilishly fun cosplay on Reddit, including “a small prop,” which is a fully functioning electric go-kart that he built himself. The full video was shared to the More Tools Than Sense YouTube channel, which shows the cosplayer constructing his racing machine from the ground up before it transitions to a shot of the cosplayer blasting off down a driveway, accompanied by the iconic sound effects of Mario Kart. “I did build it from scratch, and it did take forever,” the cosplayer said.
According to More Tools Than Sense, the kart was built “from the ground up” using two 500 watt electric motors, two li-on batteries and “and a lot of cutting and welding.” The Waluigi Kart isn’t the only build that More Tools Than Sense has constructed, with several posts detailing his creation of The Studabreaker, his own rat rod inspired by Mad Max: Fury Road. Other posts highlight his mechanical prowess outside the world of cosplay, like restoring a rusted-out engine and using an old microwave to build a spot welder.
However, More Tools Than Sense’s Waluigi build isn’t the only recent cosplay that has garnered excitement on social media. For example, a reality-bending WandaVision cosplay originally had many people arguing that it was made using image editing software before the cosplayers posted a response video, detailing how they crafted their amazing two-tone costumes. Other recent examples of inventive cosplays include Instagram user LowCostCosplayTH using clothespins to create the spiky hairdo for his Super Saiyan Blue Goku costume and blogger TechnoChic making an adorable President Loki outfit for her dog.
Created by Fumihide Aoki and voiced by Charles Martinet, Waluigi originally debuted in Mario Tennis for the Nintendo 64 and Game Boy Color. Since then, the character primarily appeared in spin-off titles like Mario Party, Mario Kart, Mario Golf and Super Mario Maker. While the character originally received mixed reviews from critics, over the years, Waluigi gained a passionate fan following in part due to his popularity as an internet meme. His fans even went as far as to launch a Change.org petition when it was revealed that Waluigi would only be a non-playable Assist Trophy in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate during E3 2018; the petition to make Luigi’s rival a playable character garnered thousands of signatures.
While Waluigi remains a non-playable character in Super Smash Bros., fans of the purple-clad, self-pitying plumber can play as him in titles like Mario Kart 8 and Super Mario Party, which are both available for the Nintendo Switch.
