An upcoming issue of X-Men will see Marvel’s mutants face off against the might of classic Captain America villain M.O.D.O.K.
The heroes of Krakoa have been busy since re-establishing themselves as one of the Earth’s top superhero groups. Not content with fighting against the X-Men’s creepiest villains, the team has come into conflict with some of the most sinister threats that Marvel has to offer in their quest to show the world that man and mutant can prosper together. Now, Marvel’s own M.O.D.O.K.-aficionado Ryan Penagos revealed via Twitter that the X-Men will be coming across the Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing in X-Men #8, set to arrive in February 2022.
Written by Gerry Duggan and drawn by guest-artist Javier Pina, X-Men #8 sees M.O.D.O.K. taking aim at the Krakoan heroes. This past fall, the X-Men fought M.O.D.O.K. and A.I.M. on his home turf as the maniacal headcase attempted to use the X-Men’s science to fuel his own technological advances. His reappearance seems to imply that M.O.D.O.K. is out for revenge, but it is possible that he has a new vendetta in mind. The cover art by Pepe Larraz and Marte Gracia shows M.O.D.O.K. clutching the mask of Jean Grey, who shares telekinetic and telepathic abilities that mirror his own powers.
M.O.D.O.K. was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in Tales of Suspense #94 as a villain for Captain America. George Tarleton was originally a skilled engineer who joined Advanced Idea Mechanics to work on the Cosmic Cube before he was mutated and had his intelligence greatly increased by their mad science. In the years after this physiological change, M.O.D.O.K. became the figurehead of A.I.M., created a family in his own image and went on to plague many of Marvel’s mightiest heroes.
In recent months, Duggan’s X-Men crossed paths with many foes outside of their usual rogues gallery. Captain America villain Black Mamba fought against some of Krakoa’s mutants in X-Men Unlimited, decimating two of their youngest heroes. Meanwhile, the fan-voted X-Men faced off against the demon Nightmare in their own series. When the villain used his control over the dreamscape to attack the team in their sleep, Jean Grey fought the Dark God with her Omega-Level abilities, saving New York City in the process.
Elsewhere, the ranks of the X-Men will expand in February’s Secret X-Men. The oversized one-shot stars the losers of the fabled X-Vote that placed Polaris onto the main team. The issue will be written by Tini Howard and drawn by Francesco Mobili, as Sunspot and Cannonball lead the misfit mutants on a mission to Shi’ar space to save Empress Xandra, the daughter of Professor X and Lilandra.
