The X-Men’s Most Dangerous New Mutant Just Overpowered Professor X

The student becomes the master in X-Men Unlimited #10, as a dangerous new mutant proves capable of overpowering Professor Xavier.

WARNING: This article contains major spoilers for X-Men Unlimited #10, available now on Marvel Unlimited.

Ever since embarking on a small scale eco-terrorism crusade, Nature Girl and Curse have been on the run from the X-Men. When they finally catch up to them, Curse manages to overpower Professor X, showing how powerful and malevolent she can be even though her powers are not completely under control yet.

X-Men Unlimited #10 (by Gerry Duggan, Emilio Laiso, Rachelle Rosenberg, VC’s Joe Sabino, and Annie Cheng) depicts one of the most dangerous new mutants using her burgeoning powers to overpower Professor X. The issue opens with Emma Frost and her entourage being served a wrongful death lawsuit for two billion dollars on behalf of Cynadine Oil, the company that Nature Girl and Curse have been attacking since they left Las Vegas. Frost immediately took the issue to Magneto and Professor X. Fearing future lawsuits and public scrutiny, Professor X physically subdued Nature Girl and told her to to return to Krakoa immediately. Curse, however, was unaffected by Xavier’s psychic attack.

Curse Nature Girl

Curse attempted to free Nature Girl from the control of the professor as Professor realized that Curse was somehow immune to his power. The quietly dangerous mutant then used her powers to short-circuit the Cerebro helmet and injure the professor in the process, causing Xavier to concede that the powerful mutant was evil.

Curse’s immense power and dark heart are nothing new. She has the power to jinx people simply by speaking to a person while focusing on them. When she confronted a group of workers at a oil pipeline, she was able to kill one of them simply by saying she hoped he tripped. Interestingly, Professor X’s powers aren’t the only ones who don’t work on the young mutant. When Black Mamba attacked by using her Darkforce to haunt the mutants with their past, Curse was unaffected and was more fascinated than anything. While she’s clearly incredibly strong, it’s also clear that she has little-to-no training when it comes to effectively using her powers.

Given that the secret to the X-Men’s resurrection is on the verge of being revealed, lawsuits and public scrutiny are the last thing the mutants need right now, which is why Emma Frost urged Wolverine to find the defectors as quickly as possible.

With the X-Men looking to become a major cosmic power, an incident like this could produce serious complications to their overall goals. Unfortunately, Nature Girl and Curse have already shown beyond a shadow of a doubt that they are not willing to simply give themselves up, even if that decision puts them in the crosshairs of Wolverine.
