Ogroids are pests more than actual threats in The Witcher 3 and The Witcher: Monster Slayer, but you still need to know how to tackle them.
The meanest, and oftentimes ugliest, monsters stomping across the Continent are ogroids. They come in a variety of sizes but are more or less humanoid. Ogroids may not possess the intelligence of human beings, but some of them come pretty close, which players will see as they play through The Witcher 3, though not so much in The Witcher: Monster Slayer.
Depending on which game you’re playing, taking of ogroids requires wildly different approaches in both CD Projekt Red’s award-winning game and Spokko’s AR mobile app. Either way, it’s best to prepare some ogroid oil and keep that steel sword at the ready.
Nekker
Nekkers were introduced in Andrzej Sapkowski’s Sword of Destiny, in the story “Something More.” They are small, but ferocious and can overwhelm wandering travelers and other prey through numbers. That becomes clear in The Witcher 3 and are best dealt with using bombs. They tend to dwell in caves or in forests. Listen for their shrill cries and screeching.
There are several different types of nekkers to watch out for in Monster Slayer: You have the common nekker and swamp nekkers, which are vulnerable to fast attacks and kinetic energy. Then, you have the carnage nekker and nekker warriors, which are both vulnerable to strong attacks. All are vulnerable to silver. While the regular nekkers are fairly easy to kill without using anything other than a steel sword, the rest should not be underestimated.
Cyclops
These ogroids are gigantic and possess one eye in the center of their foreheads. In The Witcher 3, they can often be found around the Skellige Isles or guarding treasure in Velen. Witchers might be strong, but if you think you could possibly parry any of a cyclops’ attacks, you’ve got another thing coming. Just focus on staying out of the cyclops’ way as it flails its arms about. Jump out of the path of its charge and try to get around it to strike from one of its more vulnerable angles. Throwing Igni wouldn’t hurt, but the most useful sign here would be Quen.
In Monster Slayer, you’ll find these colossal monsters anywhere and at any time, though they’re more common in the day. Keep to strong attacks with a steel sword. Ogroid oil will help, but what you’ll really need are some basic bombs or grapeshot bombs and, again, Quen. These are fairly difficult monsters at two skulls. Time your parries and maybe use a vial of Swift, if you’ve got any.
Trolls
Unlike Internet trolls, rock trolls and ice trolls aren’t necessarily as annoying as they might seem. They aren’t as intelligent as the elder races or humans, but they can be reasoned with, and you’ll find that you can oftentimes avoid fighting them in The Witcher 3, since witchers only kill dangerous monsters and not creatures just looking for a hot meal or peace. If you do find Geralt facing one, it’s best to get in front of them, since their backs are protected by a rocky hide. Use Quen to protect yourself, prepare ogroid oil and hit them with Aard when they start covering their bellies with their arms.
In Monster Slayer, you’ll find them in any kind of environment — and you won’t be able to talk your way out of a fight. That fight will be much simpler though. Use strong attacks with your best steel sword, throw a few shots of Aard and time your attacks. They are fairly tough, so a basic bomb might help a lot. Additionally, just like in The Witcher 3, it is possible to encounter an ice troll. These are three-skulled monsters, and you’ll need Igni instead of Aard to beat them, as well as a collection of your best fire-based bombs.
Ice Giant
Some of the biggest creatures on the Continent are ogroids. Across the Skellige Isles, you’ll find an ice giant living on Undvik in The Witcher 3 — Myrhyff, the last of his kind. They behave similarly to cyclopses and draw their strength from the cold. Ice giants are also able to summon sirens to aid them, so hybrid oil is a must. Again, don’t stay in one spot and try get around the giant to attack. More appear at the end of The Witcher 3, but you don’t have to fight them all. In fact, it’s best if you just avoid them altogether.
Ice giants appear as Legendary Monsters in Monster Slayer. They are three-skull creatures that appear around bodies of water or around wetlands. Use strong attacks with a steel sword and Igni to fight it. You will definitely require basic bombs or Dancing Star bombs to help you in this fight.
