Netflix surprised audiences everywhere by dropping a new trailer for The Witcher Season 2. This one showed off some of the most exciting monsters in the upcoming season and gave viewers a better idea of where each of the central characters will be.
While there are plenty of familiar faces throughout, the Season 2 trailer also introduces some new elements. Long-time Witcher fans may recognize some of these features, while others will seem completely new to even the most attentive of Witcher enthusiasts. We’ll take a look through the trailer to see what the most significant moments are and what they tell us of Season 2.
A FIRST (PROPER) LOOK AT VEREENA
Geralt’s battle with the bruxa has been teased since early on. Some fans may have been looking forward to this since it was first reported that Season 2 would be adapting “A Grain of Truth” from Andrzej Sapkowski’s The Last Wish.
The story introduces the bruxa, named Vereena, who can unleash a powerful sonic cry and can transform into a ferocious bat-like monster. She can be seen using both of these abilities in the trailer, but Geralt is prepared with a silver sword and his witcher potions.
FILAVANDREL RETURNS
Once known as Filavandrel of the Silver Towers, the elven leader was introduced in Season 1 in “Four Marks.” There, he was shown living with a small band of non-humans in hiding, trying to survive in a land where non-humans were cruelly persecuted by humans.
His appearance in the Season 2 trailer suggests that he is now leading a larger band of elves, likely the Scoia’tael. Images and reports from the set of The Witcher Season 2 suggested as much, but the trailer officially confirms it. The only uncertainty is how he will treat his captives– Yennefer of Vengerberg and Fringilla Vigo, one of the commanding figures leading the remaining Nilfgaardian forces from Sodden Hill.
STREGOBOR TORTURES YENNEFER
Stregobor returns in Season 2 of The Witcher. This time, he has Yennefer of Vengerberg in his grasp and appears to be torturing her for some unknown reason. Fans will remember Stregobor as the despicable and cowardly mage who hired Geralt to kill Renfri, persuading him that she was a child possessed by the Curse of the Black Sun.
It was Stregobor who initially suggested sending Yennefer to Nilfgaard when the Chapter at Aretuza was deciding which sorceress to send to which kingdom. Ultimately, Yennefer — completely transformed — won over King Virfuril of Aedirn and was sent to the Northern Kingdom instead. Stregobor was also the mage who persuaded the others at Aretuza to leave Cintra to defend itself from Nilfgaard.
TISSAIA AND YENNEFER REUNITED
Tissaia de Vries and Yennefer of Vengerberg did not see eye-to-eye on many occasions. Tissaia could be a cold teacher much of the time. It wasn’t until Yennefer decided to break away from Aretuza and the sorceresses and fight at the Battle of Sodden that Tissaia started treating her like an equal.
Unfortunately, almost immediately after Yennefer incinerated the Nilfgaardian forces at Sodden Hill, she vanished, leaving Tissaia alone on the battlefield, yelling Yen’s name. The trailer reveals that the two will eventually reunite. Judging from the background of the shot, it could be that they find themselves back in the hallways of Aretuza, but this is just speculation.
CIRI AND THE WITCHERS
In Sapkowski’s Blood of Elves, Ciri trains at the mountain fortress of Kaer Morhen under the guidance of Geralt and his fellow witchers, including Vesemir. The Season 2 trailer offers glimpses of the Cintran princess as she explores the mountains and appears to go on the hunt with Lambert, played by Paul Bullion, and Coën, played by Yasen Atour.
Previously released stills and reports revealed early on that, just like in the novels, Ciri would train as a witcher. Whether or not she will face off against a monster as part of her training, as the brief clip in the trailer seems to suggest, is unknown.
CIRI MEETS TRISS
In Season 1, Triss was shown to be associated with almost all three of the show’s main characters, though not in the same way as she is in the novels. Where Season 2 does appear to be adhering more closely to the books is in Ciri’s encounter with Triss.
In Blood of Elves, the sorceress arrives at Kaer Morhen to take a look at how the witchers have been treating the Cintran princess, at the request of Geralt. If Season 2 follows the novels closely, the shot in the trailer may suggest that by that point, Triss will become a part of the next major arc in Ciri’s journey.
CIRI MEETS YENNEFER
Ciri and Yennefer’s meeting was teased in photos that leaked from the set of The Witcher Season 2. Seeing them together confirms how much of Blood of Elves and Time of Contempt the upcoming show will get through, since Yennefer is the one who meets Ciri and starts her on the path to becoming a sorceress.
Unfortunately for those eager for details, nothing in the trailer reveals how Yennefer goes from Nilfgaard’s captive to Ciri’s mentor or how Ciri departs from Kaer Morhen and, from the looks of it, Geralt’s company.
NENNEKE
One notable absence in Season 1 in its adaptation of The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny, was Nenneke, archpriestess of the Temple of Melitele in Ellander. In the novels, it was she who treated Geralt after his fight with the striga. The Netflix series seemed to replace her with Triss.
It was previously reported that the show will finally introduce its version of Nenneke and the Season 2 trailer confirms it, albeit later in the story. She is being played by actor Adjoa Andoh.
RIENCE
Just as in Blood of Elves, Season 2 will see the introduction of Rience, a powerful mage from Ban Ard with an even more powerful master, one that fans from across the franchise will already be familiar with. In the novels, Rience was sent to find Ciri, who escaped from the massacre of Cintra.
The trailer only offers a glimpse at his fiery power, but if he is anything like his novel counterpart, Geralt, Yennefer and Ciri are in for the fight of their lives.
THE LESHEN
Not long after production on Season 2 began, there were reports that Kaer Morhen would be attacked by a monster and that the battle against it would have serious consequences for the residents of the mountain fortress. The Season 2 trailer confirms that the leshen — which was speculated to be the monster at the time — will indeed attack Kaer Morhen.
Throughout the trailer, viewers can see the witchers, armed with silver swords and enhanced by potions, fighting a creature often off-screen, with bits of bark flying everywhere. There were also reports that the leshen attack would result in the death of a major character, though the trailer unsurprisingly doesn’t confirm this.
THE BARD RETURNS
Jaskier and Geralt parted ways in “Rare Species,” after the witcher chastized the bard for causing all of the misfortunes they had experienced, only because Geralt was wounded after being left alone by Yennefer. In Season 2, audiences find Jaskier in prison, released by Geralt.
It may not have been purely out of friendship, however, since Geralt says soon after that he needs the bard’s help. It is unclear what Geralt needs help with, but Jaskier reluctantly agrees to help, leaving his mousy cellmates behind to do it.
