WARNING: The following contains spoilers for The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, now available on Netflix.
Netflix’s The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf focuses on the backstory of Vesemir, a popular witcher in Kaedwen who goes on to mentor Geralt of Rivia and a new breed of honorable magical soldiers. This adventure informs why Vesemir would change his ways and try to fix the order, set a century or so before The Witcher live-action series occurs.
With that in mind, let’s break down the key players in Vesemir’s journey.
Theo James as Vesemir
Vesemir is a swashbuckling witcher, traveling across the realm and earning coin by killing monsters in style. He’s got a massive ego, but his world is rocked when he discovers some of the creatures plaguing the lands are tied to his fraternity. He proceeds to uncover dark secrets about their origins, reevaluating what the order means.
Theo James voices Vesemir. The actor starred in the Divergent films and voiced Hector in Castlevania.
Lara Pulver as Tetra
Tetra is a loyal sorceress in King Dagread’s court, always trying to incite war on Vesemir’s people. She believes they’re seeding monsters out so they can slay them and earn coin. Tetra doesn’t have proof, though, and quickly runs afoul of Vesemir after he’s arrested for dissent. Tetra uses this opportunity to unravel sinister truths about the witchers.
Lara Pulver voices Tetra, having played Irene Adler in the BBC’s Sherlock while also appearing in True Blood.
Graham McTavish as Deglan
Deglan’s the head of the witchers at Kaer Morhen, overseeing the brutal training of younglings like Vesemir, who either ran away or who were traded to them. He doesn’t care who lives or dies, as long as he gets strong soldiers who don’t hesitate to kill. Sadly, the militant Deglan is hiding secrets regarding the monsters.
Graham McTavish voices Deglan, and will appear in Season 2 of The Witcher as Dijkstra. He also lent his voice to Netflix’s Castlevania series.
Mary McDonnell as Lady Zerbst
Lady Zerbst is a member of Dagread’s royal council, and is often found butting heads with Tetra while defending the honor of witchers. She admits some are flawed, but others help clean up the lands. She has skeletons in her closet, though, coincidentally linked to Vesemir’s past. This leads to Zerbst making key decisions that change everything for Vesemir.
Mary McDonnell voices Zerbst. Her many live-action acting credits include Battlestar Galactica, the Fargo TV show, and Donnie Darko.
David Errigo Jr. as Young Vesemir
Flashbacks show young Vesemir’s ambitions to slay monsters and make money. He’s influenced by Deglan performing an exorcism, deciding this is the life for him. He doesn’t want to be a gofer in a poor village, opting to leave to join the order. However, these actions have a ripple effect that connect the bestie he abandoned, Illyana, to Lady Zerbst decades later.
David Errigo Jr. voices the kid, having worked on Pacific Rim: The Black and The Seven Deadly Sins.
Tom Canton as Filavandrel
Fil, as Vesemir affectionally calls him, is a colleague who helps the witcher as part of their quid pro quo deals. However, this film finds Vesemir ignoring Fil’s request for help as the elf searches for missing girls. This drives a wedge between them as he loses respect for the greedy Vesemir. Fil realizes Vesemir’s bosses aren’t to be trusted as well.
Tom Canton voices Filavandrel, having previously played the character in The Witcher Season 1. He also starred in Amazon’s Truth Seekers.
Matt Yang King as Luka
Luka’s an egoistical witcher, often found making rude comments, scouring for guys he thinks are worthy of his time, and also reminding everyone they’re beneath the witchers. Vesemir can’t stand him but when he needs a drinking buddy, Luka’s perfect. Sadly, Luka runs afoul of Tetra’s knights, which leads to dire consequences for the order.
Matt Yang King voices Luka, having also worked on Riverdale, Netflix’s Love, Death & Robots, and the horror series Sweet Home.
The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf is now available on Netflix, with The Witcher Season 2 arriving on Dec. 17.
