The Wheel of Time’s Marcus Rutherford Discusses Playing the Show’s ‘Gentle Giant’

The Wheel of Time star Marcus Rutherford describes what it was like playing the role of the “gentle giant” Perrin in the upcoming fantasy series.

As Amazon’s The Wheel of Time fast approaches its release, Perrin actor Marcus Rutherford discusses how he sees his role as the show’s “gentle giant.”

Rutherford, alongside many of his co-stars, discussed their roles in an IGN First exclusive interview on YouTube. One of the show’s core cast, Rutherford plays the role of the major protagonist Perrin. He provided an overview of the character, saying, “Perrin is one of the Two Rivers gang that you meet very early on. He’s sort of the gentle giant of the group, and the village blacksmith really. He’s kind of grown up very close to Rand and Mat, who you’ll meet as well, and he’s one of the main characters who you’ll follow across the journey.”

Perrin’s journey will see him leaving his home in the Two Rivers alongside the Aes Sedai Moiraine. He will be joined by some of his friends from Emond’s Field, as all could possibly be the reincarnated soul of the Dragon. Speaking on the group’s dynamic, Rutherford said, “I think they all have something that they need from each other. I think that’s really what you kind of gauge quite quickly. I think they all have characteristics of each other that they need and require.”

Rutherford specifically explained Perrin’s relationship with Rand, and how they differ yet support each other. He said, “I think Rand is very sort of headstrong and will always follow his heart, that kind of stuff. But I think Perrin, probably more likely to kind of think something through and to kind of question it. But at the end, I think he sort of knows that Rand would always do something out of the goodness of his heart and that’s why he’s such a close friend to him.” This was quite similar to how Josha Stradowski described Rand: “stubborn” yet “very loving and afraid.”

In a recent trailer for the show, Perrin can be seen talking to the character of Egwene, played by Madeleine Madden. He shows his homesickness when he solemnly asks her, “Do you think we’ll ever go back?” However, much more lies in wait for Perrin, who won’t be able to avoid becoming a prominent figure in the story. As showrunner Rafe Judkins stated in a previous interview, “Mat and Perrin are so much more than sidekick characters.”

The Wheel of Time, based on the epic fantasy book series by Jordan and Brandon Sanderson, will premiere Nov. 19 on Amazon Prime Video.
