The Wheel of Time’s Madeleine Madden opens up about playing the “liberated” character Egwene in the upcoming Amazon Prime Video series.
The Wheel of Time‘s Madeleine Madden recently detailed how she got into character as Egwene in the upcoming Amazon Prime Video series.
“In fantasy, there are no limits or boundaries,” Madden shared during a new interview with The Age. “The worlds are so epic. A lot of people like losing themselves in these fantastical worlds. I think The Wheel of Time is really unique in this genre because we address universal themes.”
The actor also praised the series for allowing the cast to “explore sexual identity, race and gender equality,” which she said is rare in the fantasy genre. “The women are really at the forefront of this story,” she continued. “In this world, it’s not something radical or out of the ordinary for them to be in positions of power, or to hold authority.”
Madden further described Egwene as “a really liberated character,” noting, “This isn’t something radical or something that should be frowned upon in our Wheel of Time world. Hopefully this can inform us.”
Madden’s comments about her character build on what she previously told CBR about the sisterly bond between Egwene and Nynaeve, who is portrayed by Zoë Robins. “Egwene just thinks the world of Nynaeve, and where we find the women at the beginning of our story is exactly like you said — she looks at Nynaeve as a mentor and is just so inspired by her and being an independent woman and following her dreams,” Madden said at the time. “They have such a strong bond that, even when they’re in the most dire situations, brings them back together. It’s just been amazing having Zoë as my way of life — so wonderful.”
In addition to the first three episodes of The Wheel of Time premiering later this week, the official Twitter account for the series revealed over the weekend that a series of animated shorts titled The Wheel of Time: Origins will be released concurrently with new episodes of the show. The shorts are set “years and centuries before” the stories told in Season 1 and will be available to stream through Prime Video X-Ray via Amazon’s FireTV remote or a mobile device.
Based on the epic fantasy book series by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson, The Wheel of Time will premiere Nov. 19 on Amazon Prime Video.
