Josha Stradowski, star of Amazon’s upcoming fantasy series The Wheel of Time, discusses which weapon in Rand’s arsenal he and his character preferred.
Josha Stradowski, who will be playing Rand al’Thor in Amazon’s upcoming The Wheel of Time series, revealed which weapon he and his character were most fond of in Season 1.
Stradowski joined other members of the cast and the series showrunner for an exclusive Q&A with Find the Metaverse. During the interview, Stradowski was asked about a particular sword that falls into his character’s possession and how it felt to train with. The actor responded, “That’s the heron-marked blade. The heron-marked blade is a sword that you can only get when you reach a certain level of sword fighting. That’s when you become a blademaster, I guess it’s like a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Tam, Rand’s father, he was a blademaster and he owns such a sword, and this sword becomes a really important weapon on their journey.”
As Stradowski’s comments suggest, the blade is not quite something Rand himself has earned. The character lives with Tam, his father, as a farmer in the region known as the Two Rivers. While Tam is a character with a storied history, as his ownership of the heron-marked blade suggests, Rand was raised as a normal farming boy with his friends in Emond’s Field. As such, audiences can expect Rand’s earliest displays of swordsmanship to not quite live up to the blade’s reputation. It’s something the character will have to overcome fast in order to survive the pursuit of the Myrddraal.
However, the actor did comment on Rand’s existing skillset, remarking upon his familiarity with a bow and arrow. Stradowski said, “But Rand, first, is more familiar with his bow and arrow, so I had, also, archery training besides stunts training and all the other trainings we had.” When asked which weapon in Rand’s arsenal he preferred wielding as an actor, Stradowski answered, “I guess I must go with the bow and arrow first.”
Rand and his traveling companions will come to rely on those weapons throughout the series, as the adventure they find themselves on will involve various monsters hunting down the heroes. As trailers have shown, despite beginning the series with a peaceful life in Emond’s Field, the cast will soon be forced to leave their homes due to circumstances beyond their control. Guided by the mysterious Aes Sedai Moiraine Damodred and her companion Lan, Rand and his friends must leave behind their peasant upbringing and learn to fight back against the forces of the Dark One.
The Wheel of Time is based on the epic fantasy book series by Jordan and Brandon Sanderson, who completed the series following Jordan’s death in 2007. The show will premiere on Nov. 19, exclusively on Amazon Prime Video.
