The Wheel of Time Star Confirms She Was Pushed Off a Cliff For the Show

Amazon’s The Wheel of Time star Madeleine Madden reveals that she was really pushed from a cliff for the recent teaser trailer’s opening shot.

Following the recent teaser trailer for Amazon’s The Wheel of Time, one of the show’s stars revealed that she really was pushed off a cliff for one of its scenes.

Madeleine Madden, the actor cast as Egwene al’Vere, revealed on Twitter that one of the trailer’s standout moments was in fact a real stunt. The teaser opened with Egwene being shoved from a cliff by Nynaeve al’Meara (Zoë Robins) who mutters, “Be strong,” before casting her over the edge into the river below. Moreover, Madden revealed that she performed the fall into the water herself. She wrote, “And yes, I was actually pushed off a 12m cliff.”

The backdrop for the stunt bears similarities to other shots in the trailer that show the protagonists’ home village of Emond’s Field, which is located in the Two Rivers. While the cliff jumping scene does not appear to be anything lifted directly from the books, Egwene sought to be an apprentice Wisdom to Nynaeve. Unlike her book counterpart, Egwene in the show, alongside the rest of the main cast, will be aged up, having already come of age. This is further implied by the braided hair worn by both characters, which in the books is prohibited until a woman has reached adulthood.

While the purpose of the scene was not confirmed, one of Egwene’s goals in the first book is to join the Women’s Circle, an all-female committee in charge of maintaining social protocol in the Two Rivers. Women are a powerful presence throughout the Wheel of Time, being the only ones permitted to access the magic of the world.

Following the release of the teaser, Madden wrote on Twitter, “I’m so excited to share with you our teaser trailer for The Wheel of Time. For the past 2 years, I have lost myself in an incredible world alongside some of the most brilliant people I’m lucky to call family. Bringing Egwene to life has been an absolute honour and dream.”

Amazon’s adaptation of Robert Jordan’s book series is set to take certain liberties with a non-linear approach to the source material. The 14 volume series stars a large cast of characters but primarily focuses on five young residents of Emond’s Field at the beginning of the adventure. In addition to Madden’s portrayal of Egwene, she will be joined on her journey by Nynaeve alongside Rand (Josha Stradowski), Perrin (Marcus Rutherford) and Mat (Barney Harris).

The Wheel of Time is based on the epic fantasy book series by Jordan and Brandon Sanderson, who completed the series following Jordan’s death in 2007. The show will premiere on Nov. 19, exclusively on Amazon Prime Video.
