The Wheel of Time’s Josha Stradowski, who plays Rand in the upcoming fantasy series, thinks of his character as a sheepherder rather than a hero.
One star of Prime Video’s The Wheel of Time shared more about his personal take on his character, referring to his character Rand al’Thor as a sheepherder rather than a hero.
Josha Stradowski provided his view on Rand in an IGN First clip on YouTube. As one of the leading protagonists of the book series by Robert Jordan, Rand is a character who is very much an archetype of the Hero’s Journey. However, Stradowski had a somewhat different approach to Rand as he appears in Season 1, referring to him as “just a sheepherder, he’s a farmer boy.”
As one of the five young villagers who leave Emond’s Field alongside Moiraine on her journey to keep the Dragon Reborn away from the Dark One, Rand has grown up under the guidance of his father, Tam, living a simple and seemingly unremarkable life. However, like his friends, he might be the one Moiraine is looking for, and the mere possibility robs him of that normal life.
Speaking on Rand’s personality outside of his greater destiny, Stradowski presented a humble take on the character, saying, “He follows his heart often, and he makes decisions very impulsively, so I guess other people would call him stubborn. But I would say he is very loving and afraid. He’s many things. I don’t see him as a hero.”
Despite his farm boy roots, Rand does not entirely lack the makings of a hero. Stradowski stated in a previous interview that Rand would wield both a bow and a sword, with his weapon of choice being the bow. This too can be tied to his humble sheepherder status, as he only learned archery from his father as a means of protecting his flock.
Stradowski tried to remain true to Rand’s origins during his performance. He said on acting as the character, “I try to approach him in a very human way, you know. In my book, it says, ‘Rand, hero,’ which I don’t really like. I just want him to be, at first, he’s just a sheepherder.” Despite traveling in the company of an Aes Sedai, Rand will be bringing a part of his home with him, as he travels alongside fellow Two Rivers country folk, Perrin, Mat, Egwene and Nynaeve.
Season 2 of The Wheel of Time was announced in May this year, and production on it began in July. The first three episodes of Season 1 will premiere on Amazon on November 19.
