As the Walking Dead’s alternate reality alien invasion continues in Rick Grimes 2000, one of the franchise’s classic survivors returns with firepower.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for “Rick Grimes 2000,” in Skybound X #2 from Robert Kirkman, Ryan Ottley, Cliff Rathburn, Rus Wooton and Dave McCaig, on sale now.
In The Walking Dead comics, every character was expendable, even the fan-favorite ones. That dictum is something that the TV series followed toom especially through the deaths of major characters like Carl. One of the comic’s hardest-hitting death, though, was Andrea, who had become such a staple of the books and the ultimate classic survivor in a way the show never allowed her to be.
While she ended up dying after being bitten, the alternate reality alien invasion in Skybound X #2 just brought Andrea back with a bang and gave her more firepower than ever.
The mainstream Andrea was a true leader, helping Rick work through Lori’s death and uniting everyone to form the Alexandria-Hilltop-Kingdom alliance. She and Rick became one of the book’s most steady couples. but in Robert Kirkman, Charlie Adlard, Stefano Gaudiano and Cliff Rathburn’s The Walking Dead #167, she was bitten and had to be put down after a skirmish with the Saviors and Whisperers.
In her final moments, Rick took care of her but struggled to shoot her. It ended with her turning and him stabbing her in the head, sleeping by her grave in the night. It’s one of the franchise’s most tragic moments, as she taught him to love again and brought light to the darkness that constantly followed him. Andrea would be honored properly by the time the story concluded, though, with Carl naming his daughter after her in the wake of Rick’s passing.
However, this alternate reality tale happens right after Rick lost his mind at Alexandria and was knocked out by Michonne. He wakes up with powers and a lightsaber as aliens invade, using people like him and the zombie plague to thin humanity out so they can steal Earth’s water. Sadly, Michonne dies in this new world, but Rick fights on, wanting to rebel against the alien overlords.
Unfortunately, Lori gets ripped to pieces and devoured by the general in charge of this fleet. When Rick tries to battle him in revenge, he’s ripped in half as well. But just as he’s about to be crushed, the boss’ head is blown open by a giant blast and Andrea stands there, killing nearby zombies too. She’s looking like a ruthless leader with her guns, knives and pouches like a classic Image comics hero, decked out for war and reminding Rick they don’t die — they survive.
It remains to be seen if her camp has the tech to stitch Rick back together, which might be the case as they could have stolen it from the aliens. Even the Governor is in awe, and this cybernetically enhanced villain may very well switch sides to form a new alliance. But in this reality, Andrea doesn’t seem to care for romance or drama, she just wants soldiers for the war to save what’s left of humanity.
