The Walking Dead’s Alien Invasion Reveals Humanity’s Last Sanctuary

[ad_1]

Skybound X #3 adds an optimistic spin on The Walking Dead’s alien invasion by providing the heroes their strongest lair yet as humanity’s last hope.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for “Rick Grimes 2000,” from Skybound X #3, on sale now from Image Comics.

In the world of The Walking Dead, Rick Grimes’ crew has always run into trouble with their bases. Alexandria has been raided, Hilltop and the Kingdom have been attacked, and the frail Oceanside has been fraught with peril many times. Being out in the open leaves the homesteads vulnerable, but Robert Kirkman, Ryan Ottley, Cliff Rathburn, Rus Wooten, and Dave McCaig’s Skybound X #3 reveals the heroes’ strongest lair yet as Rick and his allies forge humanity’s last hope.

After rescuing Rick from the alien overlords and killing the Governor, Andrea reveals that their new base is underground: the Sanctuary. This helps protect them from the zombies that have overtaken the surface, with Maggie making regular excursions to scout and forage for food. It’s still a risk, however, as Maggie discovers firsthand when she is shot by a human hunting alien acolyte.

Rick holds on to hope, as the medical team works on saving Maggie. He discovers that his son Carl is safe in the Sanctuary, equipped with a cybernetic eye to replace the one he lost in the original series. Eugene is keeping the place up and running is using alien tech stolen from their enemies. They’ve got nanites to resurrect people, tech that could possibly stitch a beheaded Michonne back together, and Eugene has even been outfitted with long-reaching arms like Doctor Octopus.

Rick takes pretty well to the camp, even going laser shooting with Carl as they bond, producing a sense of home and family for the first time since Lori’s death in the previous issue. He even engages in a relationship with Andrea, similar to what developed between them in the mainstream comics. It’s all due to their numbers growing as they recruit and bring people down — seemingly having the space, resources and a degree of trust they couldn’t afford before. The fact there’s a mini-fair in the underground hub where Carl can get ice cream says it all — this is a place where the survivors can truly be happy and move towards their dream lives again once the war is over.

Eugene comes up with a plan to end the war, harkening back to his role as the resident genius among the survivors. He deduces that their weapons, tech and alien ships are all connected, and reasons that he should be able to find the mother ship’s signal and hack into it.

Unfortunately, the group is infiltrated by Negan, who’s looking to disrupt the tranquility of their new home. But with artillery, manpower, and advanced tech on their side, the residents of the Sanctuary are well-equipped to fight back to ensure that their enemies don’t ever get the upper hand.
