The Walking Dead’s Alien Invasion Gives Rick Grimes a Perfect Ending

[ad_1]

In Skybound X #5, “Rick Grimes 2000” gives the Walking Dead leader the perfect ending and the ultimate army to keep peace on and off Earth.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for “Rick Grimes 2000,” in Skybound X #5, available now.

In The Walking Dead, Rick Grimes didn’t get a happy ending. The zombie apocalypse survivor was murdered during a civil war at the Commonwealth near the end of the series, which felt like an injustice as he ushered the alliance so close to peace. However, “Rick Grimes 2000” gives Rick the perfect ending and the ultimate army to keep it that way in Skybound X #5, by Robert Kirkman, Ryan Ottley, Cliff Rathburn, Dave McCaig and Rus Wooton.

Rick’s death still doesn’t sit entirely well with fans who were angry that Sebastian Milton shot him in cold blood in his room. While Carl brokered peace before growing old with Sophia and their daughter, Andrea, Sebastian rotted away in jail akin to what Rick did when he preferred not to execute Negan. Yet it wasn’t adequate to many. However, the end of this alternate reality tale saves Rick and transforms him from a war hero into a planetary defender after an alien invasion.

Rick realizes the Whisperers are the heartbeat of the zombie golem ravaging the Sanctuary, so he uses a flying skateboard and his lightsaber to slaughter them. Coupled with Maggie killing Negan and Eugene getting the bat that controls the zombie horde, Rick had everything he needs to lead the charge with the defiant rebels against the aliens.

While the aliens who started their attack on Earth with a zombie apocalypse are defeated, Earth still needs rebuilding. As Carl narrates in the epilogue, he admits that Rick is having the time of his life leading Earth’s defense force against the aliens. As Carl enjoys the quiet life with his wife and child on a farm, Rick’s main time is spent with the Strike Squad.

Eugene harvested all the tech that the aliens left behind after they were defeated, and he reverse-engineered elements so they now have space stations, fighter jets and everything that they need to fend off an invasion. It’s a sight to behold as Rick wants to be proactive, forming a shield around the planet. This is a formidable fighting force that can easily take down any threat that comes in front of them.

Rick can be seen in the finale with his beloved Andrea in space suits, flying off into orbit with a zombie head on his hull. It’s cheeky but honors the dream he had of saving people back when he was just a sheriff outside Atlanta. Despite all the deaths he and his friends endured, this alternate world finally allowed Rick to become the legend he was always meant to be.
