In the alien-infested Walking Dead world of “Rick Grimes 2000,” Maggie finally gets a shot at revenge against one of the series’ greatest villains.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for “Rick Grimes 2000,” in Skybound X #5, available now.
Through the alien-infested world of “Rick Grimes 2000,” Skybound X has offered The Walking Dead fans an alternate reality where heroes from the mainstream books can exact the vengeance they didn’t get before. This has already happened with the maniacal Governor, and Maggie’s able to finally get the revenge she wanted, albeit under different circumstances as this story comes to an end in Skybound X #5, by Robert Kirkman, Ryan Ottley, Cliff Rathburn, Dave McCaig and Rus Wooton.
This involves killing Negan, something fans of the comics wanted desperately after the pain he caused her and Alexandria. In comics Maggie never got revenge against him for killing Glenn with his barb-wired bat, Lucille, leaving her unborn kid without a dad. Sadly, that revenge never came for her, no matter how much she wanted it, which even drove a wedge between her, Rick and Michonne for a while. It’s even been translated to the TV show as well, where Negan is on the path to redemption by helping the alliance in the wake of his heroics against the Whisperers.
But for Maggie and anyone else who wanted to see her get some vengeance for Glenn, she finally has in a resounding and bloody fashion.
In this alternate universe, aliens started the zombie invasion and have given survivors superhero-esque weapons and upgrades to work for them. While Negan doesn’t crush Glenn’s skull in this world, Maggie’s reaction and the gore are all necessary as she’s defending her territory. With Negan crashing into the Sanctuary, Rick’s coalition quickly realizes they need his bat, which is effectively serving as a control rod for the zombie golem attacking them.
In addition to controlling the zombies, Eugene deduces that the bat could have the signal he needs to hack to end the aliens’ comms and bring down their tech and systems. And on Eugene’s advice, Maggie steps up, not caring that Negan bashed her hand in earlier. As Negan is distracted by Rick and Michonne bringing the undead titan down, Maggie pounces with her Winter Soldier-esque cybernetic arm.
With one powerful strike, Maggie blindsides Negan, smashing his face apart with her iron fist. In a gruesome homage to Glenn’s death, Negan’s eye pops out, just like when he bashed Glenn’s head in.
This is a truly fitting end for Negan that ends his sadistic, partnership with the aliens that are trying to take over the world and gloating about it. Since this world never got to the events of Glenn’s death in The Walking Dead #100, this particular version of Negan didn’t kill Glenn, but he still targeted one of humanity’s last outposts, which was filled with children to boot.
However, this moment doesn’t take place in a vacuum, and Maggie’s attack on Negan feels like long-overdue retribution for one of the franchise’s signature heroes. And in any world, this serves as a reminder of how lethal Maggie can be when her people are threatenened.
