As “Rick Grimes 2000” continues in Skybound X #4, the villainous Whisperers from The Walking Dead are transformed into the ultimate zombie weapon.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for “Rick Grimes 2000,” in Skybound X #4, on sale now from Image Comics.
In The Walking Dead comics, the Whisperers were truly a force to be reckoned with. While the likes of the Governor and Negan were symbols of oppression that could have been broken, Alpha and Beta, wearing zombie skin as masks, cultivated a true cult. This movement swarmed across the lands in stealth, wrecking Alexandria and the other parts of Rick Grimes’ alliance.
Luckily, a redeemed Negan was released to help turn the tide by killing Alpha, with Paul and Aaron taking out Beta later on. This helped to end the Whisperer War arc after many lives, both young and old, were taken, but now this sinister duo is given a much bigger role, literally, in the continuation of Robert Kirkman, Ryan Ottley, Cliff Rathburn, Rus Wooten, and Dave McCaig’s “Rick Grimes 2000” story from Skybound X #4.
In “Rick Grimes 2000,” Rick is stunned when Negan barges into the Sanctuary on a hovercraft, attacking the facility with his trusty bat. He kills Abraham and wounds Maggie, sending Eugene and the others fleeing. However, Negan’s bat also acts as a homing beacon, summoning walkers to him in an effort to finish off the last bastion of humanity for his alien overlords.
Whisperers are among the zombie horde, wearing their masks and also working alongside Negan and the aliens. It’s a terrifying team-up with Rick, Andrea and the others now desperate for help. Even though they’re in danger of being overrun, the survivors need Negan’s weapon so they can hack the aliens’ communication signal and bring down their tech.
Unfortunately, as Alpha and Beta continue on the warpath, they indicate the aliens no longer want to capture and enslave Rick’s group of survivors, as they are now considered tainted. They had a choice to join willingly, spurned the offer and now they must pay for their defiance with their lives. This leads to Alpha and Beta kissing, emitting a unique energy field. The alien energy attracts the zombies to them, who then merge to form a giant undead golem.
It’s a surreal sight, with even Negan marveling at the zombie titan. Even worse is the fact that the behemoth is adamant about smashing the Sanctuary to pieces, and just might have to power to do so.
At this point, Rick and Andrea realize they’re going to need better weapons to deal with this twisted new nightmare. Even if Eugene has something up his sleeve capable of dealing with this titan, the ensuing conflict is sure to cost the survivors even more lives.
