Skybound X #2 continues to put an even more horrific spin on The Walking Dead comics as a key hero gets another gruesome death in battle.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for “Rick Grimes 2000,” in Skybound X #2 from Robert Kirkman, Ryan Ottley, Cliff Rathburn, Rus Wooton and Dave McCaig, on sale now.
In the comic book universe of The Walking Dead, Lori Grimes’ death remains one of the most heartbreaking events. In issue #48, when the Governor’s forces raided the prison home of Rick Grimes and the other survivors, his wife Lori was killed by a shotgun blast to the back.
Lori was holding her baby Judith when she was shot, and she tragically fell on the baby when she was shot, killing her as well. This was a devastating loss for Rick, and proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that human beings were the real monsters of this undead world. Now, in Skybound X #2, a reimagined Lori Grimes faces a tragic death once again that manages to be even more gruesome the second time around, much to the chagrin of Rick.
The story, “Rick Grimes 2000,” mashes up the worlds of Invincible and The Walking Dead, and finds Rick in the role of a costumed hero as aliens have invaded, turning many people into super-powered beings to help them take over the world. The first wave has been seeding out the zombie virus and now, it’s up to these entities, like a cybernetic Governor and also, a robotic version of Lori, to finish off humanity so their overlords can harness Earth’s water as the ultimate resource.
Rick’s shocked as he never expected to see Lori alive again, but he’s also seeing many friends like Michonne dying in the brutal confrontation. Rick tries to convince the humans to turn against the aliens, but the Governor is clearly frightened by the overlords. Lori herself holds Rick hostage with her giant blaster, making it clear he needs to submit if he is to have any hope of surviving.
Rick’s rebellious, as usual, scoffing at the small lizard-like general who leads the group. However, much to his horror, the alien transforms into an intimidating Hulk-like figure and attacks. Rick’s lightsaber-like weapon doesn’t hurt the creature and just when it seems like Rick will be smashed to bits, Lori turns her blaster on the monster. She fires on him to save her husband, but it is all to no avail.
Enraged, he rips her in half in a very graphic sequence that leaves Rick in disbelief. The monster then devours her head, and makes it clear that she won’t be returning again. This is yet another terrible loss in the already tragic life of Rick Grimes.
The impact of this frightening death is seen in the eyes of the Governor as well, as he sees a reflection of the sadist he once was. It’s a nasty, much gorier finale for Lori and a cold reminder that she’s just not meant for happy endings.
