After a disastrous launch, Rockstar begins offering one of five free games to owners of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition on PC.
Rockstar Games is offering owners of the Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition on PC their pick of a free game following the remastered collection’s highly-criticized launch.
The promotion will allow players to redeem one of five PC games from the developer’s online store free of charge. Rockstar announced that Grand Theft Auto V: Premium Edition, Grand Theft Auto IV: Complete Edition, Max Payne 3, L.A. Noire and Bully: Scholarship Edition will all be included as part of the promotion, which will remain available to players who purchase GTA: The Trilogy by Jan. 5, 2022.
Eligible players also have the option to choose in-game currency for either GTA Online or Red Dead Online, with a Great White Shark Cash Card or 55 Gold Bars being included in the aforementioned promotion as well. All players, meanwhile, can take advantage of additional savings, as the Rockstar Store is currently offering a 50-70 percent discount on classic Rockstar PC games as well as 40 perfent off apparel and collectibles and 20 percent off the PC version of GTA: The Trilogy.
With the remastered collection being pulled from Rockstar’s website only a day after its release due to problems with the Rockstar Games Launcher, GTA: The Trilogy has since become one of the worst-reviewed games of all time. Players have noticed a variety of issues with the collection’s graphics and performance across all its versions, criticizing poor optimization, glitchy character models, distracting rain effects and an abundance of bugs. Rockstar itself also came under fire for delisting the original versions of Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City and San Andreas from various digital storefronts, effectively forcing new players to buy the Definitive Edition versions instead.
A virtual reality mode for San Andreas was recently discovered left behind in the Definitive Edition‘s code, providing an unintended preview of a seemingly scrapped feature. Only accessible through the debug menu via mods, VR mode allows players to enter a first-person perspective of the game’s protagonist, Carl “CJ” Johnson. Though combat and player collision aren’t optimal in VR mode, it does hold potential for creative screenshots and could be officially added to the game in future updates considering Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas VR for Oculus Quest 2 was announced as part of Facebook’s Connect 2021 live stream.
Players wondering which of the offered games to redeem may want to consider Bully: Scholarship Edition, as a sequel to one of Rockstar’s most classic and controversial titles might be on its way. Bully 2 was reportedly intended to be revealed during this year’s Game Awards, with a playable version of the long-awaited sequel supposedly existing, according to a respected leaker. Though Rockstar has not officially discussed a potential Bully 2, the leaker claimed that “there’s something definitely ‘going on’ to do with the series.”
