Viola Davis, who plays Amanda Waller in The Suicide Squad, praises director James Gunn for his work, calling him a “fierce leader.”

The Suicide Squad actor Viola Davis praised director James Gunn following the movie’s positive first reviews, saying that Gunn was the “fierce leader” behind the film’s success.

Davis posted her thoughts to Instagram, referencing an article that called The Suicide Squad “hysterically funny, brilliantly acted,” and “entertainingly gory,” noting the film’s success with critics. “Great movies don’t happen by accident. It takes the artistry of collaborators… actors, writers camera operators, cinematographers, producers AND….. DIRECTOR!!! Thanks to the brilliant, twisted, sweet, funny, open mind of [James Gunn].” She added, “You are a fierce leader and created an experience that made us all feel cared for and worthy!!!”

Davis plays Amanda Waller in the film, the director of A.R.G.U.S. who runs the Task Force X program, which was nicknamed the Suicide Squad. Davis is one of three actors returning to the film to reprise their role from David Ayer’s 2016 adaptation. The other two actors are Margot Robbie, reprising her role as Harley Quinn, and Joel Kinnaman, returning as Rick Flag — though Kinnaman says that Gunn’s Rick Flag is a completely different character from his 2016 portrayal. Davis isn’t the only The Suicide Squad actor to praise Gunn. The director was held to acclaim by Kinnaman, who called the film Gunn’s “best movie” yet; as well as Peacemaker actor John Cena, who said that Gunn is “so gifted in so many ways.”

In the movie, the titular team of supervillains is sent to South America in order to infiltrate the heavily guarded island of Corto Maltese and destroy all traces of a secret experiment known as “Project Starfish.” The assembled team is composed of Harley Quinn, Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, Savant, Poka-Dot Man, original characters TDK and Ratcatcher 2 and team leader Rick Flag, among others. Gunn warned fans to not get too attached to any members of the large cast as Warner Bros. granted him full permission to kill any of the characters.
