The Suicide Squad director James Gunn shares a behind-the-scenes photo of Sean Gunn’s first makeup test as the villain Calendar Man.

The Suicide Squad writer-director James Gunn has shared a behind-the-scenes photo of his brother, Sean Gunn, during his very first makeup test for his role as the DC Comics villain Calendar Man.

“First ever makeup test for [The Calendar Man] in [The Suicide Squad],” James Gunn wrote on Twitter. The attached photo sees a bald-headed Sean Gunn staring down the lens. He is sporting an orange prison uniform and, of course, the abbreviations for the months of the year written around his head.

While it had long been known that Sean Gunn would star in The Suicide Squad as the CGI character Weasel, the younger Gunn sibling also had a surprise cameo in the film as Calendar Man. During an early scene set within the Belle Reve correctional facility, Calendar Man briefly appears in order to insult Polka-Dot Man (David Dastmalchian).

Created by Bill Finger and Sheldon Moldoff, Calendar Man/Julian Gregory Day was originally introduced in 1958’s Detective Comics #259. After an extended absence, he returned two decades later in 1979’s Batman #312, sporting a calendar-themed costume. Calendar Man would later receive a radical overhaul in the 1996 limited series Batman: The Long Halloween by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale.

The Long Halloween re-imagined Calendar Man as a Hannibal Lecter-esque figure who taunted Batman with cryptic clues in the latter’s pursuit of a mysterious serial killer. This incarnation of Calendar Man would go on to inform the character’s appearance in a number of subsequent adaptations, including the Batman: Arkham video games, the Harley Quinn animated series and, of course, The Suicide Squad.

The Suicide Squad is playing in theaters and streaming on HBO Max now.
