The Suicide Squad’s Biggest Rivalry Makes Its Way to Comics

[ad_1]

The Suicide Squad film featured members Bloodsport and Peacemaker as rivals, with the characters now facing off in comics under different roles.

A DC Extended Universe rivalry has made its way into comics with Suicide Squad #11.

Director James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad hit cinemas and HBO Max over the summer of 2021, introducing viewers to Idris Elba’s Bloodsport and John Cena’s Peacemaker. In the film, the two hold a rivalry being that — according to Bloodsport — Peacemaker “does exactly” the same thing as the assassin, even showcased in one scene where the two try to best one another with more and more creative kills. In a preview for the upcoming issue of the Suicide Squad comic series, the two’s rivalry gets illustrated with a twist.

A critical point near the climax of the film comes when Bloodsport finds Peacemaker about to gun down breakout character Ratcatcher-2, who many consider to be the heart of the film and is responsible for Gunn changing his original ending. Though Peacemaker was a member of Task Force X, he was secretly carrying out an ulterior motive for Squad handler Amanda Waller, killing Col. Rick Flag and attempting to kill Ratcatcher-2 to bury the United States government’s dirty secrets and work with Starro the Conqueror. Bloodsport was friends with Flag and cared for Ratcatcher-2, causing a single-bullet, gun showdown that ended with Peacemaker in critical condition (but alive enough to get his own solo television series, which has recently released its second trailer).

In the comic preview, the two have switched roles, with Peacemaker now loyal to Flag and Bloodsport carrying out Waller’s plans still, despite the bomb placed in his head being fried by Ultraman at the end of Suicide Squad #5. The loyalty reversal also comes after Peacemaker wanted to carry out Waller’s plans in the name of “peace,” at least until Waller began to punish him with a mission hunting down Swamp Thing after thinking that he was a double agent for Flag (an agent who was actually the Batman villain Talon). Though Bloodsport contemplates escaping in the issue, he still continues to work for Waller for an unknown reason, causing him and Peacemaker to fight like in the films.

A smaller callback to The Suicide Squad film also comes when Ambush Bug asks the reader if they imagine Bloodsport’s dialogue with a British accent, a clear reference to the London-born Elba. The preview and solicitation for the upcoming issue can be found below, whose cover also teases a showdown with the Retaliators of Earth-8, DC’s version of the Avengers from Marvel Comics.
