As the Suicide Squad battles the Crime Syndicate of America, the team of anti-heroes take a powerful hostage with them as they navigate Earth-3.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Suicide Squad #6, on sale now from DC Comics.
Ever since the start of the Infinite Frontier era, Amanda Waller has been striving to add some of the most powerful characters to Task Force X and further her agenda at any cost. No longer confined to recruiting antiheroes and villains from the main DC Universe, Waller has extended her ambitions to the newly reborn multiverse. And as the Suicide Squad faces off against the Crime Syndicate of America on Earth-3, the team captures one of this world’s most prominent figures, Black Siren.
Waller has had designs on Earth-3 for some time after receiving permission from the President of the United States to expand the Suicide Squad’s mission to the multiverse. To perform reconnaissance on alternate universes, Waller dispatches Bloodsport to investigate the morally inverted world. As Bloodsport remains incognito for months while gathering data, Waller identifies Black Siren, this world’s incarnation of the Arrowverse’s Black Canary, as a possible recruit. However, as Bloodsport moves to isolate and extract Black Siren, he is ambushed by Ultraman, leading to a full-on battle between Task Force X and the Crime Syndicate, escalating in Suicide Squad #6 by Robbie Thompson, Eduardo Pansica, Julio Ferreira, Dexter Soy, Alex Sinclair and Wes Abbott.
With Ultraman possessing the powers of Superman, the Suicide Squad appears to be outmatched in the face of his unbridled fury until Black Siren turns against him. Unleashing the full might of her Canary Cry, Ultraman is hurt by the sonic attack, but quickly regains his senses. With the vampiric antihero Nocturna seen close to Black Siren as she unleashes her Canary Cry, she may be using her supernaturally telepathic powers to mind control Siren into turning on her teammate. It’s clear that Siren is being coerced into attacking the Crime Syndicate after she is later seen bound with her mouth taped shut as the Suicide Squad escorts her away in search for a way back home.
Future State revealed why Waller was keen on recruiting figures like Black Siren onto Task Force X as she expanded her mission directives. Waller is set on forming ensembles posing as the Justice League and installing them in power on alternate worlds throughout the multiverse to serve her agenda. This is partly why Waller forced Superboy to join the Suicide Squad and has led to a falling out with longtime field commander Rick Flag when he realized Waller’s long-term plans. With Black Siren on the team, Waller would not only have her own Black Canary but one that understood the inner workings of Earth-3 better than anyone else when Waller installs a faux Justice League in the universe.
While Bloodsport jeopardized Waller’s entire mission on Earth-3 by being discovered by Ultraman when he attempted to make the Black Siren extraction, the overall plan appears to have endured this setback. The Suicide Squad has escaped the Crime Syndicate, with only minimal casualties incurred, and with both Bloodsport rescued and Black Siren captured. The Suicide Squad still isn’t home free yet and is now facing the wrath of another nefarious figure on Earth-3. But they are one major step closer to Waller getting her own twist on Black Canary to complete her planned team.
