As the Suicide Squad goes on a cosmic mission across the DC Universe, they have a showdown against the new Green Lantern Jo Mullein.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Suicide Squad #9, on sale now from DC Comics.

Ever since the Infinite Frontier era started, the Suicide Suicide has been picking fights with every across the DC Multiverse, including those that may have them outclassed in a fair fight. From infiltrating Teen Titans Academy to going on an extraction mission targeting the Crime Syndicate of America on Earth-3, Task Force X has steadily added to its growing list of powerful enemies while going on the run for their more illicit activities. And as Amanda Waller has the Suicide Squad blast off for its most cosmic mission yet, the lethal team finds itself on a collision course with the newest human recruit to the Green Lantern Corps Sojourner “Jo” Mullein.

Jo was created by N.K. Jemisin and Jamal Campbell in the acclaimed 2019 comic book miniseries Far Sector as a recent recruit to the Green Lantern Corps tasked with investigating a murder mystery on the faraway City Enduring, unraveling a massive conspiracy in the process. With Far Sector published through DC’s Young Animal imprint, it was initially unclear if Jo and her adventures were canonical within the main DC Universe but, after the subsequent Future State and Infinite Frontier eras, Jo was incorporated into the DCU, with Future State hinting that Jo is destined to one day serve as the Justice League’s resident Green Lantern. And in Suicide Squad #9 — by Robbie Thompson, Eduardo Pansica, Julio Ferreira, Dexter Soy, Marcelo Maiolo and Wes Abbott — Jo goes head to head against the might of Task Force X.

Green Lantern Jo Mullein Vs Suicide Squad

Using an old Kryptonian spaceship from an alternate universe, Waller sends the Suicide Squad to Oa to extract a prisoner held in the ruins of the Green Lantern Corps’ old headquarters left behind after the Central Power Battery exploded and the spacefaring peacekeepers left the planet. While Oa is largely abandoned, the Suicide Squad quickly earns the attention of Jo, who returns to her former headquarters to take on the bulk of the team while a splinter group moves to extract their intended, new recruit. And while still a rookie compared to more veteran Green Lanterns, Jo more than holds her own singlehandedly against her opponents.

Impressively, Jo is seen able to conjure forcefields capable of withstanding direct hits from flawed Superboy clone Match without breaking a sweat, all while underwater monsters on Oa rampage through the proceedings. One key confrontation that does occur between Jo and the Squad is the chance for her to square off against Major Force. The Captain Atom supervillain has a particularly antagonistic history with Jo’s fellow Green Lantern Kyle Rayner, tormenting the young superhero for years and personally murdering his girlfriend to lure Kyle into a trap. Instead, Force moves to extract the target while the rest of his team keep Jo busy.

Jo has more than held her own against the Suicide Squad but, because of the sheer amount of chaos unfolding, Task Force X has managed to escape without her bringing them to intergalactic justice. In the meantime, the Suicide Squad’s cosmic odyssey has given them even more explosive things to worry about as they leap from one spacefaring enemy headlong into an ambush with another, threatening to cut this magical mystery tour short. And having crossed swords with Jo Mullein, Amanda Waller has just made a new, powerful enemy that may come looking for her soon.
